The anime film Godzilla: Monster Planet (aka. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters) now has a Japanese-language trailer, and it looks like a whole lot of fun. The movie begins a theatrical run in Japan in November, and it will arrive on Netflix for American audiences on an unspecified date after that.
This anime ventures into the far-flung future, imagining a world where Godzilla and his kind live alongside a sci-fi version of mankind. The film, directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, will focus on the final battle between these two sets of species. Can the technological superiority of man win out against the sheer might of Godzilla and his pals? You’ll just have to watch to find out.

This trailer is bound to get anime enthusiasts very much onboard. It looks like a fun and fresh take on the Godzilla mythos, animated with some serious style. It’s just a shame, for non-Japanese-speaking audiences, that an English dub wasn’t released alongside this version of the promo. Luckily, though, a synopsis already exists, to fill in the English-speaking fans on what’s going on:
“The animated movie takes the franchise into uncharted territory — a harsh world of the future in which Godzilla has dominated the Earth for the past 20,000 years, and a fateful final confrontation with mankind looms. Prepare for the earth-shattering roar of a brand new GODZILLA, unlike anything heard or seen before.”
Following on from the teaser, this Monster Planet trailer certainly sets the stage nicely. It opens with a child noticing Godzilla in the distance. A huge explosion follows, and so does a lot of panic. Then the trailer jumps to a faction of humans, preparing for battle and standing atop some sizeable robots. After that, glimpses of Godzilla are shown, between black titles, loud orchestral parps, and ominous-sounding dialogue. Next, oddly enough, some pop music blares out and some spaceships wiz through the air, firing at Godzilla. This movie looks utterly mad, in the best possible way.
However, anime-averse film fans might not be too excited by this. The anime style isn’t for everyone, and those that aren’t enthralled by its madcap mayhem still have a while to wait before another live-action Godzilla movie comes along: the next one isn’t slated to arrive until 2019, when Millie Bobby Brown and Charles Dance will star alongside the atomic-breathing icon in Godzilla vs. Kong, and perhaps even a crossover with Pacific Rim one day.

Godzilla: Monster Planet hits theaters in Japan on Friday, November 17. It will be made available through Netflix thereafter.
