Because of Godzilla vs. Kong’s human villains, Kong could become bait for Godzilla. If so, that would set up one of their fights in the MonsterVerse movie. Similar to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and many other Godzilla movies, the 2021 film could feature more than one fight between the central Titans.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse will pit the King of the Monsters against the King of Skull Island. Though both monsters have been pop culture icons for more than half of a century, this will only be their second big-screen meeting. The first happened in Toho’s 1962 crossover, Kong will get a size boost to pose a physical challenge to Godzilla. However, the fight could play out quite differently this time. A definitive winner has been confirmed, but it’s hard to say if it will be Godzilla or Kong who takes home the glory.

So far, very little is known about the circumstances leading up to their fight or why the two will come to blows, especially since Warner Bros. is still holding on to the trailer. But, a few seconds of footage that was recently shown off at CCXP provides a hint of what to expect from Kong’s story in the new movie. Kong was briefly glimpsed with a metal collar around his neck, so for some reason, the MonsterVerse will at least partially recreate the sequence in the 1933 King Kong which saw the monster put in chains by humans. What’s not known, though, is who’s responsible, why it will happen, or how such a feat could be pulled off. One possible explanation is that Godzilla vs. Kong’s human villains are behind it, and that their goal is to use Kong as a trap for their real target: Godzilla.

Everything We Know About Godzilla vs. Kong's Villains

Legendary hasn’t revealed who the human villains of Godzilla vs. Kong will be yet, but some clues can be gleaned from the movie’s synopsis. First of all, it’s said that the MonsterVerse will be threatened by a “human conspiracy” designed to eradicate all of the planet’s Titans. This particular detail means they’re not the same antagonists used in Godzilla vs. Kong’s villains appear to share a hatred for the creatures. The weapon they’ll use to accomplish their goal is presumably Mechagodzilla, a classic Toho monster whose inclusion was spoiled by a toy leak.

Godzilla vs. Kong's Villains Could Capture Kong

Kong Skull Island Roar

The credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters strongly suggests Skull Island will be central to the story. That’s where the Titans are headed, its Hollow Earth entrance will be the starting point for Monarch’s investigation into the origin of the Titans, Monarch already has an outpost there, and perhaps most importantly, it’s where Kong is based in the MonsterVerse. Given Skull Island is so integral to the plot, it may also be the destination of the human villains. Depending on the size of their forces, it could be that they’ll take a page from Jonah’s eco-terrorists and launch an assault on Skull Island. If the attempt is successful, they could take over Monarch’s outpost and assume control over all their resources, which could potentially include Mechagodzilla. The King of the Monsters credits mentioned a “mechanized giant” being built by the organization on the island. This certainly feels like a nod to Mechagodzilla, since he does indeed appear to be in the movie.

If the villains wish to use Mechagodzilla and whatever other weapons Monarch may have at its disposal to get rid of the Titans, it’s not hard to guess who their first target would be. The Titan they share the island with, Kong, would most assuredly be their greatest threat. To carry out their conspiracy, they’d first have to deal with him. One way that might work is by deploying enough gas to knock him out. That’s what the humans did in the 1933 original, so it could be that this tactic will be repeated in the MonsterVerse. A more drastic way of getting him out of the way of their mission is to send Mechagodzilla after him. One thing a Mechagodzilla vs. Kong battle early in the film would accomplish is that it would get across to audiences that Godzilla’s robotic counterpart is a force to be reckoned with that shouldn’t be taken lightly. If Mechagodzilla defeats and subdues Kong, the villains would then have the opportunity to put restraints on him.

Kong Could Be Used As A Trap For Godzilla

Interestingly, Kong's captors haven’t killed him. If he's captured by Monarch, it may be that they simply don’t want to kill a benevolent Titan. But if it’s the villains who are behind this, they’d need a compelling reason for not immediately killing such a dangerous enemy. They do want to kill the Titans, so having an ulterior motive for keeping him alive makes sense. One way to explain their decision would be if they plan to use him as a trap for Godzilla. It’s possible that prior to Kong’s capture, the Titan has already battled Godzilla once. If the two have already developed animosity for each other through combat, both could understandably desire a rematch. If Godzilla vs. Kong’s antagonists are aware of this, they could exploit that by capturing Kong and using him as bait.

Their assumption could be that Godzilla would hunt Kong (just like he did the MUTOs and Ghidorah), and a fight would ensue on Monarch’s base. As for how bringing two giant monsters together could be in any way beneficial to them, it may be that they’re eager for a shot at Godzilla himself. Taking out the alpha could cause chaos within the Titans, making it easier to eliminate the rest of them. Their plan may be to let them to fight it out, and then take out the winner by unleashing Mechagodzilla. Whichever monster wins could be too weak from injuries to survive a full-length showdown with the robotic Titan. Unless the human protagonists are able to stop this plan from reaching fruition, the fate of the MonsterVerse could in serious trouble in Godzilla vs. Kong.
