Apple TV+’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Mecha-Titan tease. A hint in the Godzilla sequel revealed the existence of a robotic monster in Godzilla and Kong’s cinematic world. Interestingly, this creature is not APEX’s Mechagodzilla.

Obviously, the idea of a mechanical monster is not a new concept for Godzilla vs. Kong when it unveiled Mechagodzilla as its main villain. Thanks to a power-up from the secret Hollow Earth energy source, this manmade Titan proved itself powerful enough to beat Godzilla himself. Thanks to some much-needed interference from Kong, Mechagodzilla is no longer a threat to the MonsterVerse. However, that doesn’t mean humanity’s problems with Mecha-Titans have ended. Robots of similar design and stature could be introduced in future MonsterVerse installments.

At least one Mecha-Titan was in construction before Mechagodzilla was even built in Godzilla vs. Kong. Newspaper clippings in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits dropped a shocking reveal about Monarch’s activities. Spotted in the text of the article titled “Monarch Boosts Their Forces Around Skull Island” was a curious line about “a mechanized giant”. According to the article, a scientist named De La Rosa revealed that Monarch was building a “mechanized giant” on Skull Island. The subject of this claim could finally be explained in Apple TV+’s Godzilla show, especially since it will take place before King of the Monsters.

The movie’s Mecha-Titan reference was originally perceived as a Mechagodzilla Easter egg or setup for his Godzilla vs. Kong role, but the reveal that he was built by APEX (not Monarch) confirmed that Skull Island's mechanized giant is actually something different. Since the MonsterVerse’s TV series will explore the events that followed the 2014 Godzilla movie, the show will have an opportunity to explain exactly what Monarch was up to on Skull Island, what robot they were working on, and why.

It makes sense that in the aftermath of the San Francisco battle, Monarch would have considered defensive measures in the event that Godzilla failed to protect Earth from a Titan threat. As for what that could entail, it’s possible that Monarch’s secret project is a MonsterVerse adaptation of an existing Toho kaiju, such as Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla’s Moguera, Godzilla vs. Megalon’s Jet Jaguar, or King Kong’s robotic counterpart from King Kong Escapes, Mechani-Kong. Since Mechagodzilla’s campy nature didn’t stand in the way of a role in Godzilla vs. Kong, one of these three could be reimagined for the MonsterVerse. Alternatively, the mechanized giant may be an entirely new Mecha-Titan. Either way, the robot could be Monarch’s best weapon against any villainous Titans that emerge in Apple TV+’s Godzilla show.
