IDW has a massive year ahead for Godzilla and his fellow Kaiju. With a new series just announced that features the famous monster battling it out with aliens in space, I couldn't be more excited to be a fan of Godzilla in 2025.

It is a great time to be a Godzilla fan. As I scrolled through Instagram, to my delight, I noticed that IDW had announced another Godzilla series. Come May 14th, 2025, Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #1 by Frank Tieri, Angel Hernandez, and Heather Breckel will stomp its way into comic shops.

Taking place in mid-century America, the unexpected arrival of UFOs surprises and scares humanity, but these are no ordinary UFOs. These are Xilien invaders, and Godzilla may be humanity's only hope, according to the press release posted to Godzilla's official website.

This War of the Worlds on steroids will all be seen through the eyes of Bob Jones, the last remaining agent of the project blue book-esque Project Colossus, a US government division specializing in proving the existence of Kaiju. Poor Bob's about to lose his job but keep in mind this is 1954 - and if you know your Godzilla history, you know what that means. So now suddenly they actually need Bob, for both his Kaiju expertise and for the hope he can somehow get Godzilla and the gang to help them repel the Xilen's incoming invading forces.

While Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens Is a New Comic, There Is Something Familiar About It

Reading more about this plot on the official Godzilla website, I could not be more pumped. Anything is possible in comics, so having Godzilla starring in his own War of the Worlds-like comic seems right up my alley. Both the original Godzilla film and many American sci-fi movies - like The Thing from Another World, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and War of the Worlds - explore the fears of post-World War II society. Blending Godzilla with this genre just makes perfect sense and will lead to an interesting commentary on these fears of the past and present.

Some familiar faces are set to appear, like Mothra, Gigan, Space Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Rodan...

While this plot is not one I have seen explored in a Godzilla comic yet, for fans of Godzilla films, some of these ideas may sound familiar. As the Godzilla website points out, the Xiliens are from the 1965 movie Invasion of Astro-Monster and the 2004 movie Godzilla Final Wars. Along with their inclusion, some familiar faces are set to appear, like Mothra, Gigan, Space Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Rodan, who was tragically wasted in the Monsterverse movies.

Meanwhile, fans of the Godzilla comics will be delighted to learn that Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens will be the conclusion to the Eisner-nominated series Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons, which jumped even further back in time to the 1500s. This should not deter any new readers though, as Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens is still a starting point for them, and it can act as a stand-alone series, one that takes place centuries after the events of Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons comic.
