Gigan is a classic Toho kaiju who has been around in King of the Monsters three times on the big screen and is one of many characters fans are hoping will eventually make it into Legendary's MonsterVerse.
The MonsterVerse has brought four Toho properties into the MonsterVerse including Godzilla himself, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. That number is expected to grow to five with the introduction of he would love to use Gigan in a future installment in the Godzilla franchise.
So who is Gigan? The Toho monster made his debut in 1972's Godzilla and Anguirus in an epic two-on-two showdown that resulted in the villains' defeat. He returned for another two-on-two bout in Godzilla vs. Megalon, this time with his ally being the titular cockroach monster, and Godzilla's ally being Jet Jaguar.
Gigan received a major redesign in his latest movie appearance, which came in Godzilla: Final Wars. Here, Gigan was upgraded with new and more dangerous weapons. Despite only being in three movies, Gigan is one of Godzilla's most popular enemies, and there's a good reason why so many fans want to see him in the MonsterVerse. Most of his popularity stems from his fight with Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Gigan. Though Godzilla had been around since 1954, it took a battle with Gigan in 1972 for the King of the Monsters to finally bleed. With his bladed hands, Gigan laid into Godzilla, cutting him all over and hitting him with several savage blows.
Gigan succeeded in delivering the most gruesome beating Godzilla has ever received, and because of this, King of the Monsters actor O'Shea Jackson has called Gigan the "worst thing possible". Based on this movie, it's easy to see why Gigan has such a feared reputation in Toho's Godzilla movies.
Gigan was included in concept art for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. If he were ever adapted to the MonsterVerse, it's unclear how he'd be adapted, but it's likely that his background as an invader from a distant galaxy would go unchanged, considering that Ghidorah's alien origin was properly translated to King of the Monsters. But most importantly, the MonsterVerse's Gigan would need to be portrayed as an incredibly dangerous adversary to Godzilla.
