This year has brought about a comic book renaissance for Godzilla, thanks to several exciting new titles from IDW Publishing, along with the King of the Monsters' increasingly frequent incursions into Marvel canon. The latter escalates to an entirely new level with the release of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1, the synopsis for which reads:

LOOK OUT NEW YORK! A previously dormant Godzilla has been angrily awoken and begun carving a path of annihilation as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes band together to try and stop its cataclysmic rampage! But when their combined efforts fail to slow the Bringer of Destruction, Earth’s heroes are forced to go to extraordinary lengths to try and bring Godzilla down – including ing forces with Earth's most devious villains! But will this be enough to stop Godzilla as it tears straight through the Marvel Universe into the Dark Dimension and other realms? Plus, how is the King of the Monsters connected to the mysterious metal, Vibranium, and what does this mean for Wakanda? In the face of an unstoppable force of nature, the Marvel Universe must come together like never before in this earth-shattering fight for Earth’s survival. It’s all hands on deck in the FIRST of FIVE electrifying chapters in this epic saga!

This gives fans a lot to unpack and speculate about ahead of the series' publication, from the teaser about "other realms" to the surprise link between Godzilla and Vibranium.

The synopsis also gives away the fact that the "combined efforts" of the Avengers and the rest of Marvel's top-level heroes will initially fail to impede Godzilla as the ultimate Kaiju tears a path of destruction through the Universe. This will lead to the heroes enlisting the aid of Marvel's "most devious villains," which is the kind of Faustian bargain that tends to go awry in stories like this one. With five issues for author Gerry Duggan to unfurl this story, fans should expect several twists and turns that change the dynamic of the story arc as it progresses.

Godzilla's Appearance In Marvel Comics Foreshadows A Potential Dream Cinematic Match-Up

Could Godzila Appear In The MCU One Day?

It may sound somewhat farfetched, but Godzilla's ongoing integration into Marvel Comics has already led to fans fantasy-casting a future appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe adds fuel to that fire. The impediment to this, for now, is a matter of behind-the-scenes logistics; the film rights to Godzilla are currently held by Warner Bros., making a deal to have Godzilla appear in a Marvel movie, even briefly, unlikely. However, a future acquisition of the rights by Disney would solve this problem, meaning it is only off the table for now.

Though the series will initially find Godzilla and Marvel's heroes at odds, anything could happen in the span of five issues.

In the meantime, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe will provide further proof of concept for the King of the Monsters' inclusion in Marvel lore, and will likely open up the door to further exploration of his role in the publisher's vast superhero canon. Though the series will initially find Godzilla and Marvel's heroes at odds, anything could happen in the span of five issues; the tables could turn, and it would not even by entirely out of the question for Godzilla to find himself granted honorary Avengers hip before all is said and done.
