Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Girl From Plainville
Hulu's mini-series The Girl From Plainville shows the whole truth of an overall traumatic situation so that people can understand what happened and truly learn from it.
When looking up Conrad's name, Michelle Carter's case and who she is come up. Contrastingly, nearly nothing about Conrad's life or aspirations is mentioned. The Girl From Plainville does a remarkable job giving a deeper look into Conrad's life and personality while also showing both the good and the bad. While the series begins with the absolute tragedy of Conrad's death, it also makes sure to have uplifting moments showing Conrad's happiness.
The mini-series is unique in how it handles such a sad situation by focusing on each character for who they are, with all their flaws and complex layers. In its depiction of Roy's death, The Girl From Plainville doesn't sugarcoat the case, but it shows how complicated it is, as well as making sure to humanize each character in a way that the news coverage simply couldn’t. More than just focusing on the case itself, the series is keener on giving a glimpse into who Conrad was as a person, instead of just being the face of a tragedy. As a result, this more well-rounded portrayal helps enhance the narrative and makes the series more successful as a result.
Co-creator Liz Hannah wanted to make sure the series showed the "grey area" of Conrad and Michelle's relationship, as nothing is as simple as it seems. When interviewed, Hannah claimed: "I just don't think anybody is truly [black and white], most of us are shades of grey. And this relationship between Michelle and Conrad was so grey... Doing the grey area is really hard. It's not clean. Everybody wants an answer to why things happened, but you never really have a clear answer." (the true-crime series focuses on, and it does it in a conscientious, diligent way.
Although The Girl From Plainville shows a different side of Conrad, the inevitable, depressing outcome hangs over the viewer's head. What co-creator Liz Hannah said was true; no matter how much everyone wants answers, no one will ever have a clear answer to why this happened. Overall, offering a different, almost cheerful side of Conrad is something special, and The Girl From Plainville carefully tackles this in a sensitive and also educational way.
