Rory Gilmore is a unique teenager. The popular character from Gilmore Girls reads like crazy, hangs out with her mother instead of a huge group of friends, and stands out in her small town. She's not caught up in a mystery like high schoolers on some other TV dramas, and the conflict in her life stems from relationships and worries about the future. She's relatable, in other words, and Alexis Bledel played her so well.

Lorelai isn't always perfect when raising Rory and there are a lot of parts of Rory's character that don't add up. While this character is one of the two main characters in this sweet and funny series, she can definitely confuse viewers.

She's Well-Read And Educated Yet Confused About Love

Alexis Bledel as Rory and Jared Padalecki as Dean in Gilmore Girls

Rory and Dean have an adorable beginning to their romance. They meet at Stars Hollow High and like each other right away. But even though Rory is so well-read and has definitely read a ton of love stories, not to mention all the movies she's watched with her mom, she seems to have no clue about love. When Dean kisses her, she thanks him, and when he says he loves her, she can't say it back.

The Dean/Jess question is one that Gilmore Girls fans can't agree on (and some fans love Logan, of course), but Dean is really kind when he and Rory first meet. While it makes sense that she would be a bit nervous since she hasn't dated before, she acts really weirdly for a while.

She Doesn't Expect School To Be Hard

Rory and Paris walking at Chilton on Gilmore Girls

Rory and her mom share a lot but it's fair to say that Lorelai was never that into school. Rory is the total opposite, as her favorite thing is sitting in a classroom and learning something new (with studying being a close second).

Rory can be confusing, though, as she doesn't expect school to be hard. When she starts attending Chilton, she's shocked to find that she gets a D and that there are too many facts to learn for an English test. When she goes to Yale, she does poorly at first. If Rory is so intelligent, she should understand that she will have ups and downs in her academic journey and that things will be challenging.

She Never Understands Lorelai's Family Problems

Emily and Lorelai in Gilmore Girls

Even though Rory grows up seeing how painful it is for Lorelai to live her life apart from her parents, there's something about wealth and privilege that really appeals to Rory.

From dating rich Logan to interning at Logan's dad's newspaper, as well as golfing with her grandfather and agreeing to be in a Debutante Ball, Rory seems to enjoy being part of that world. She doesn't seem to understand Lorelai's family problems. When she starts seeing Logan and Lorelai is upset, Rory can't see things from her mom's perspective, which is strange.

She Makes The Wrong, Naive Choice All The Time

By the time that Rory sleeps with Dean when he's already Lindsay's husband, it seems odd that she wouldn't have thought that choice through.

Rory is confusing because she often makes bad decisions that prove how naive she is. From chasing Jess in NYC to thinking that Dean should leave his wife for her, she doesn't always act like an adult.

She's Both Confident And Scared Of Her Own Shadow

There are moments when Rory can stand up for herself, like when she and Paris compete or when she ignores the popular kids at Stars Hollow High. And then there are moments when Rory seems terrified, like when she can't tell her grandma that she doesn't want a fancy party for her sixteenth birthday.

Rory has two sides to her, and she can sometimes seem like two people: a confident, calm girl who loves her small town life... and someone who can't even talk to a family member because she's afraid. This is definitely confusing.

She Never Considers How She'll Pay For Harvard

Rory goes to Yale but for the first part of the series, she's obsessed with the idea of going to Harvard. She talks about it all the time and covers her bedroom with items from the Ivy League college.

But Rory never considers how she'll pay for Harvard. She doesn't know that she'll get into Chilton, so if she stayed at Stars Hollow High, it would be tougher to get noticed by such a big, important school. Sure, she could get some financial aid, but would that really be enough? If Rory is going to be so determined to go to such an expensive school, it seems like she would give this more thought than she does.

She Doesn't Want Her Parents To Be Together

While GG fans ship Lorelai and Luke, it's true that Lorelai's other main relationship is with Rory's dad Christopher.

Rory never wants her parents to get back together, and she doesn't like when they get married or any other time when Lorelai wants to be with him. While Rory is of course entitled to her opinion, it's confusing that she would get so involved in her mom's love life. Wouldn't she think it was great that her mom and dad had a chance at finally being a couple?

She Becomes A Carbon Copy Of Emily In Season 6

Rory and Emily sitting on the couch watching TV on Gilmore Girls

In season six of Gilmore Girls, Rory basically becomes Emily Gilmore.

She becomes a member of the DAR, lives in Emily's guest house, and even starts dressing more formally. It's confusing because Rory was always okay with being a little dorky and different from other people. She wasn't brought up to be rich and fancy, so why did this suddenly appeal to her so much? This season and storyline seemed like it came out of nowhere.

She's Super Close With Her Mom Yet Runs To Her Grandparents

When Rory leaves Yale, she fights with Lorelai and runs away to Emily and Richard. She figures that they'll understand what she's going through and they actually do, letting her live in their guest house.

It's really strange that Rory wouldn't talk to Lorelai and understand that of course her mom wants her to keep going to school. If Rory and Lorelai are best pals, why couldn't they come to an agreement here?

She Keeps Dating Logan When He's Not Good To Her

Logan proposing to Rory on Gilmore Girls

Rory and Logan have a lot of problems, from him sleeping with someone else during a "break" to the fact that he doesn't have a work ethic or any idea what to do in the future.

Rory keeps dating Logan even though he's not good enough for her, and this is one of the most confusing things about her. Doesn't she think that he's spoiled and that he should have more ambition? She was raised to be a kind, good, ionate person, so it's strange that she would throw out her own values so quickly.
