Rory and Lorelai Gilmore have far more in common than their brown hair and blue eyes; they're mother and daughter and best friends. When the two of them bicker it turns into a heartfelt war because the ladies are never used to being out of sync. In fact, when Lorelai and Rory are at odds, the entire town knows it.
With Lorelai raising Rory on her own without much help from her grandparents or Rory's father, she acted like Rory's best friend more than an overprotective mother. And over the course of seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, it looks like Rory picked up more from Lorelai than just her looks.
Always Goes Back To Her High School Love
Lorelai and Chris met when they were kids and found themselves unmarried and pregnant at 16 years old. Lorelai went on to raise Rory on her own but her connection to Chris has always been strong. No matter where Lorelai is in her life, Chris is always in the background. Likewise, Rory always had Dean and Jesse. When she was with Dean, she thought of Jess. When she was with Jess, she thought of Dean. When she was with Logan, she couldn't help herself from Jess. It never ends!
Used Sarcasm To Get Out Of Uncomfortable Situations
Lorelai and Rory don't hide from conflict because that would be impossible. Drama follows any young teen while they're growing up, especially when family don't get along. Living in Stars Hollow doesn't help their case either. Everyone is in each other's business.
As a way to hide from blow-ups or tears, Lorelai and Rory both use sarcasm and pop culture references to hide from the topic at hand. Lorelai skirts around the topics by claiming she needs coffee first, and Rory lies to get herself out of something or claims she's too hungry.
Used Her Grandparents Just As Her Mom Did
The reason why Lorelai raised Rory on her own is because she couldn't stand the life her parents were living. She detested people using money as their superpower and acting in an elitist way that felt unnatural. She didn't want her daughter to be raised that way. However, when Lorelai was low on cash and needed money for Rory's private school education, she hesitantly went to her mom and dad. Emily tends to use these good deeds as a way to hold something over Lorelai, so Lorelai warned Rory to never do what she did. But what did Rory do? She went to Richard and Emily for a loan so she could attend Yale.
Blamed Her Mom For Coddling Her
With Lorelai and Rory being so close, Rory relied on Lorelai as she would on a best friend. The two were rarely apart and when they were, they always checked in with one another. This kind of relationship is what Lorelai always hoped it would be with her daughter.
However, when it came time to go away to Yale, Rory freaked out. She claimed Lorelai coddled her and sheltered her just as Emily did to Lorelai (minus the millions of dollars). Both women also rebelled against their parents. Lorelai moved out early on and Rory stole a yacht.
Tends To Lead Men On Before Breaking Their Hearts
Lorelai and Rory are gorgeous and intelligent women. Everyone who encounters them seems to be under their spell and would be lucky enough to date them. But the Gilmore girls are heartbreakers. Lorelai called off her wedding to Max and she crushed Luke's heart numerous times.
Sadly, Rory unintentionally followed in her footsteps. She cheated on Dean with Jesse, she broke up Dean's marriage, she chose a crazy life with Logan over a quiet life with Dean, and she turned down Logan's proposal even though she's the one who begged him to be exclusive.
Love Of Movies & Junk Food
The only good thing that comes from Friday night dinners with the Gilmores is a free meal and cocktails. The Gilmore girls would match rather be sitting at home with takeout Chinese food, old movies, and a box of candy. Their love for snacks and takeout food has spiraled into plenty of memes and inspired thousands of girls' nights. Even when Rory is on her own, she still loves her takeout food and snacks, and is seemingly always hungry.
Disdain For #RichPeopleProblems
Over the years, Lorelai has taught Rory that people with money, like her parents, are not good company to keep. They're always judging, criticizing, and think they (or their families) can do better. Rory agreed with Lorelai for the most part and judged snobby rich people.
When Rory met Logan, she was attracted to him but didn't want to act on her feelings because she too did not like his prestigious background or the obvious connection between his life and her grandparents'. She eventually gave into Logan but was in for a real eye-opener when she met his parents for the first time.
Hiding Relationships From Lorelai (Just As Lorelai Did To Her Parents)
As close as Lorelai and Rory are, Rory feels the need to hide some big life events from her mom. She even forgot to tell her about her big internship at Logan's father's newspaper. She didn't tell Lorelai about her first kiss with Dean, kept her iration of Jesse to herself, went to Richard and Emily for money behind Lorelai's back, the list goes on. Lorelai shouldn't be too shocked, though. She did the same thing to her parents (and continued to do so), no matter how likable her partners were.
Moving Out Of Her Mother's House Over An Argument
Lorelai's youth is a huge story point in Gilmore Girls because it coincides with how she raised Rory. She moved out of her parents' house, got a job, and made a life on her own. And while Lorelai and Rory never had arguments as explosive as Lorelai did with Richard and Emily, Rory followed her mother's footsteps in leaving when things went wrong. When she wasn't offered a job after her internship, Rory went rogue and was arrested for stealing a yacht. The arrest caused a rift in her relationship with Lorelai, so she moved out and put Yale on hold. Like mother, like daughter.
Bringing Her Exes And Her Current Boyfriends Together
Lorelai is a friendly woman but she sometimes ignores potentially explosive situations and uses sarcasm to defuse the situation. She brought Chris around Luke, which was a big mistake because it caused them to break up twice. Rory followed suit and hung out with Dean when Jesse was around, kissed Jesse when Dean was in town, and even brought Logan and Jesse together. Nothing good came from any of these interactions, and it was silly of both women to be naïve enough to think it would.
