Although The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the show’s real heroes, despite how engaging Sam and Jay’s comedic misadventures can be. Viewers are just as invested in the antics of Pete, Hetty, Flower, and Bjorn as they are in the young couple’s success, even if the ghosts can’t venture outside the grounds of the Woodstone B&B. However, not every ghost from Ghosts has received an in-depth backstory or discovered their powers yet.

Ghosts Season 4 Theory: One New Ghost's Power Explains Its Shocking Jay Twist
It is hard to see how Ghosts season 4 will justify its big Jay twist, but the CBS sitcom could use one new character's powers to set up the plot.
Fortunately, Ghosts season 4 is set to change this. According to TVLine, Ghosts season 4 will see the series finally reveal how Sass died. A member of the Lenape tribe, Sass wanted to be a storyteller during his life. He is thought to have lived sometime around the 1500s, but any other biographical information is hard to come by. That is, unless Sass secretly revealed his backstory years ago. While this sounds intriguing, I really hope that Ghosts season 4 doesn’t reveal that Sass’s sarcastic backstory was real after all, as this would ruin the character’s untapped potential.
Ghosts Season 4 Could Reveal Sass Is An Unexpectedly Recent Ghost
Sass Claimed He Died In 1995 In Ghosts Season 1 Episode 5
While Thorfinn is one of the few ghosts who is older than Sass, the two couldn’t be more different. The Viking still relies on pretty primitive communication, as evidenced in Thor’s Ghosts season 2 subplot. In contrast, Sass is, as his nickname implies, much more verbose. Sardonic and eloquent, Sass is a natural-born storyteller who frequently offers sarcastic commentary on Sam’s best-laid plans. As such, it was no surprise when Sass claimed to have died in 1995 back in season 1, episode 5, “Halloween.” Sass briefly convinced Sam that his native outfit was a costume, and he was recently deceased.
Sass’s status as a Native American allows him to bring to life part of America’s history that is all too often forgotten.
However, he almost immediately recanted the story after fooling Sam, and I think this should be the last time that Ghosts mentions the claim. Although circumstances have improved in recent years thanks to shows like Reservation Dogs, Rutherford Falls, and Dark Winds, there is still a dearth of Native American representation on television in 2024. Sass’s status as a Native American allows him to bring to life part of America’s history that is all too often forgotten entirely, and wasting this perspective on a punchline would be a terrible decision for the series. I’m certain the revelation would be a mistake.
Sass’s Backstory Shouldn’t Change His Historical Era
The Ghosts ing Star Gives An Insight Into Important Real-Life History
Although Sass could have been telling the truth about his origins after all, Woodstone B&B has plenty of ghosts from the 20th century. Sass’s indigenous roots are more interesting since he alone represents this era of history, and I’d rather see more of that story in Ghosts season 4 than the revelation that he was never alive anywhere near the 1500s. Although revealing Sass was playing into this misconception all along could be funny as a one-off gag, I don’t see much long-term potential for the twist. As such, I hope Ghosts season 4 steers clear of this callback.
Ghosts season 4 premieres on October 17, 2024, on CBS.
