details surrounding the game's release are now available. As the sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima, Yōtei embarks on another stealth action journey through historical Japan. 2025 already hit that vague concept once with Assassin's Creed Shadows, but Ghost of Yōtei shouldn't have any trouble slotting into its own niche after Tsushima won plenty of loyal fans.

Rather than picking up directly after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei fast-forwards to 1603, over 300 years later. The new protagonist, Atsu, takes on the role of the "Ghost," embarking on her own story of vengeance. True to its name, the setting moves from the island of Tsushima to northern Japan, where Mount Yōtei can be found in the much colder Hokkaido region.

Ghost of Yotei Preorder Content

As revealed in a trailer available on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, Ghost of Yōtei is set to release on October 2, 2025. This release comes over five years after the July 2020 launch of Ghost of Tsushima, although the time in-between was broken up by the addition of a Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut version. While many other October 2025 releases are likely yet to be revealed, Ghost of Yōtei arrives on the heels of the late September launches of Borderlands 4 and Bungie's Marathon.

Is Ghost Of Yotei A Sequel Or Spin-Off?

The Ghost of Yotei is clearly connected to Ghost of Tsushima, but some may still wonder just how closely the two games are related.

For what it's worth, the Collector's Edition does look like an unusually tasteful package. Inside a wooden box, you get a sash, tsuba (sword guard), mask, art cards, papercraft ginkgo tree, and a pouch with the coins to play zeni hajiki, a mini-game included in Ghost of Yōtei. The mask, a replica of the one Atsu wears in-game, matches a similar offering from the Ghost of Tsushima Collector's Edition in scale. The sash, which features the name of each villain, and the tsuba, which depicts twin wolves, likewise replicate Atsu's in-game equipment.

Ghost of Yōtei's Collector's Edition doesn't include a physical copy of the game, only a digital redemption code.

The Digital Deluxe contents, which come in both the Digital Deluxe and Collector's Editions, comprise a unique armor set, armor dye, horse and saddle, sword kit, charm, and an early unlock of traveler's maps. With a mix of purely cosmetic options and a few early-game boosts, these are all unnecessary but potentially welcome additions to the in-game experience.

Returning Features & New Possibilities

Many of Ghost of Yōtei's core mechanics resemble its predecessor's, but it also comes with some shakeups. Some of these sound incidentally closer to the approach taken by Assassin's Creed Shadows, like a non-linear framework for taking down targets throughout the story and a Sumi-e painting feature. The jump to the early 17th century also brings in some new weapons that Shadows featured, like the chained kusarigami blade and tanegashima matchlock rifle.

These new tools and options should fit into a similar overarching approach to Ghost of Tsushima, where stealth infiltrations and timing-based standoffs can both be leveraged to great effect. The "Onryō’s List" trailer features a quick succession of combat shots, focusing on one-on-one deals with several different weapons. A wolf also appears to act as a befriended companion that can be sicced upon enemies. The biggest promised change to open-world exploration is newfound freedom to build campfires anywhere, making it easier to travel and rest at your own pace.

Ghost Of Yotei Is Carrying Over The Best Ghost Of Tsushima Mechanic

Ghost of Yotei is borrowing a lot from Ghost of Tsushima, but one mechanic truly stands out as a perfect carryover and one of the coolest in the game.

1

Ghost of Yōtei's story focuses on the "haunted, lone mercenary" Atsu, whose family was killed sixteen years before the events of the game. Five of these villains are referred to by names that match their unique masks — the Snake, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, and the Dragon — while the sixth is named as Lord Saito. Saito pined Atsu to a tree with a katana at the time of her family's death, but the trailer doesn't make it clear whether he intended to kill her or let her live, only that the Snake assumed she had been killed.

The katana wielded against Atsu as a child is the same one she carries on her quest for revenge.

Of course, the narrative isn't only about vengeance, and PlayStation Blog also emphasizes the forging of bonds with new allies, much like in the first game. In the "Onryō’s List" trailer, Atsu speaks briefly with another woman who appears to be one of the Ainu people, an indigenous group in the region. She's also shown fighting and riding alongside other warriors, although much of the journey will likely be solitary.

Ghost of Yōtei has an impressive legacy to live up to, but it also has plenty of opportunities to improve and expand upon what Ghost of Tsushima accomplished. Just how well it manages won't be clear until the game is available in October, but until then, PlayStation will presumably fill the time by revealing more gameplay footage and details to build anticipation for Ghost of Yōtei's release.
