Ghost in the Shell Gets a New Anime Produced by Science SARU

Science SARU's Unique Artistic Direction Could Revive the Franchise

While it is still unclear what the new anime will entail, snippets of the manga in the promotional video suggest it could be a reboot. The new adaptation presents the opportunity to cover what the movies missed out on and perhaps cover the original manga's plot more faithfully.

Fortunately, Science SARU has had quite a good track record with wildly successful titles like Dandadan, Scott Pilgrim Takes off, and Devilman Crybaby, which promise that the franchise is in good hands. That said, Science SARU's artistic vision is quite unique, and the new anime could see the franchise revived in a refreshing way.

SARU has previously experimented with a variety of styles to great success, so it will be interesting to see the approach the studio ends up taking for Ghost in the Shell and whether they will be able to replicate the franchise's distinct dystopian atmosphere. That said, it will be interesting to see whether Toho Animation's recent acquisition of Science SARU could impact the production of The Ghost in the Shell or its quality. Hopefully, the acquisition will allow Science SARU more free reign and see the studio taking on more big projects like The Ghost in the Shell in the future.

The Ghost in the Shell is available to read from Kodansha.
