Players can recruit a huge amount of generic soldiers in Much like XCOM, customizing soldiers is a large part of the game including upgrading armor and weapons. However, Gears Tactics takes customization a step further and allows players to customize not only their soldiers' appearances but also the cosmetic appearance of each piece of armor and weaponry.
This level of customization allows the player to make every "generic" soldier into a unique character. While there is no character creator that allows players to morph the faces of their soldiers (sorry Monster Factory) there is still a wealth of customization options that players can use to deck out their soldiers. However, if you aren't looking for these options players may not find them, and once found the sheer amount of options can be overwhelming. So without further ado, here is how to customize your soldiers in Gears Tactics.
How to Customize Soldiers in Gears Tactics
First, the player will need to extent of generic troops. Hero Units are marked with stars by their names. As far as customization goes, heroes can only have their weapons and armor customized.
However, generic soldiers who do not play a major part in the story can be customized to a "t". When a character is selected the player will be given various options of things to customize: Weapons, Armor, Appearance, and Name. Heroes will only have the first two options.
Weapons can be swapped out and have attachments added to them. They can also be given a custom paint job to make them more unique or flashy. The attachments themselves will change the way the weapon functions, but the paint jobs are purely cosmetic.
Under the armor tab, players can customize a unit's helmet, upper armor, and lower armor using pieces the player has collected during battle. They can also customize the appearance of some armor pieces.
For generic soldiers, players can access the Appearance tab which gives them access to changing things such as headgear, hairstyles, clothing, tattoos, and scaring.
Players can also change a generic soldier's first and last name and can choose from a list of callsigns. With all of these options a "generic" soldier can feel more important, but be careful. While a hero is required to stay alive to complete a mission, generic soldiers are not so if one of the player's precious creations dies in battle... they're gone for good.
