Putting fans’ fears to rest, E3 2020 in the wake of the Coronavirus shutting down a plethora of physical gatherings.

Inaugurated in 2009, Gamescom has served as Europe’s answer to the United States’ E3, which debuted in 1995. From new game announcements to Microsoft’s digital event set to replace E3, Gamescom’s organizers have chosen to keep their event’s decade-spanning tradition alive.

According to the official advancements made to technology, an all-digital format would not be impossible and could increase the number of attendees due to current travel restrictions and financial concerns.

While event organizers debate whether to adopt an all-digital format in lieu of a physical showcase, fans have already formed a division between ers for a digital versus physical format. Despite health concerns, those who would prefer the physical show believe it is difficult to replace the atmosphere and ambiance created by attending an event of this caliber. Those on the other side of the fence, however, would argue that an all-digital format is preferred, and some of these fans would argue this is true regardless of current Coronavirus misfortunes.

Video game conferences like Gamescom and E3 have become more than a source of revealing new and exciting developments in the industry. They have brought those with a common interest together to share their commonalities and broaden their horizons. Gamescom, E3, PAX East, and more have served as meeting grounds where gamers can convene, revel in their excitement together, cosplay as their favorite video game characters, and bond together in similar fashion to those who attend Comic-Con. Often, these are the same people. Whether Gamescom decides to occur physically or all-digital this year will not change the ion fans feel for their favorite titles and worlds, but it may affect the social aspect many gamers crave in a world that often makes them feel isolated, even without the solitude forced upon everyone with the Coronavirus.
