Gary Larson’s The Far Side is free to joke about anything and everything, including windows.

Some readers might be wondering: what is so funny about windows? Well, as previously mentioned, The Far Side has an entire catalog of comic strips that somehow make trees funny, so it’s fair to say that nothing is off limits. And, as these 12 Far Side comics confirm, that includes windows.

12 Aggressive Advertising Strategy

A Window Repair Business s by Breaking Windows in The Far Side

A man reading an ad that was thrown through his window in The Far Side.

A man was standing by a window in his own house, reading a piece of paper that he had just pulled from a brick that had been thrown through his window. The piece of paper was actually an ment for a window repair company named "Al's Glass", and on the ad, the man was asked: "Bricks thrown thru your window?", which, clearly, the answer is yes.

Al's Glass has obviously decided to take a pretty aggressive advertising strategy to grow the business, as the advertising method is actually (potentially) having a direct hand in getting new costumers by literally creating new customers. Everyone who had their glass windows broken by the ad will need to get their windows repaired - so, why not Al's?

11 Deadly Bird Houses

Glass Windows are Deadly Additions to Bird Houses in The Far Side

A bird flying into a glass window in front of his family in The Far Side.

A mama bird is sitting in the living room of her house with her two children, enjoying a book while the kids watch TV. Then, suddenly, the family hears a loud thud on the glass window behind them, and they turn to see that the papa bird has flown directly into the glass. The mama bird says, "Well, I warned your father we shouldn't have had that glass window installed", and it turns out she was exactly right, as glass windows in bird houses are potentially deadly additions.

This comic is a play on how birds oftentimes fly into glass windows because they don't see them, which is what makes this extra funny, because the papa bird did just that despite having the window installed himself.

10 Dog Threat Letter

Dogs Deliver Threat Letters the Same as Humans in The Far Side

A dog throwing a threatening note through a cat's window in The Far Side.

A dog has thrown a bone through the glass window of a house owned by a couple of cats with a threatening letter attached to it. The note was composed of a series of cut-out letters from a magazine, and each word was simply "Arf" spelled out over and over again, as if the dog was barking at the cats through the paper.

Usually, a dog will simply bark at a couple of cats, not compose an anonymous note and throw it through their window, as that kind of threatening gesture is something unique to humans. But, in The Far Side, anything is possible, including this.

9 Watched Through the Window

A Giant Watches a Woman Through Her Window in The Far Side

A woman on the phone while a giant eyeball stares at her through the window.

A woman is talking to her neighbor on the phone while inside her home, and their conversation is about the giant that is standing in her front yard, watching her through the window. Readers can see a giant eyeball staring at the woman while she's on the phone, and while that is a terrifying sight, the woman is taking it rather well. She calmly asks her neighbor if they can peek outside and tell her what the creature that's staring at her actually is, which is pretty irable, and utterly hysterical.

It's this woman's calm demeanor in the face of incomprehensible terror that's staring at her through the window that is what makes this Far Side comic so hilarious.

8 Windows Perpetuate Anatidaephobia

Being Next to a Window is Bad for People with Anatidaephobia in The Far Side

A man with a fear that ducks are always watching him sitting in his office, with a duck watching him through the window in The Far Side.

A man is sitting in his office with a giant window behind him, through which the cityscape can be seen by anyone who enters. Unfortunately, that giant window also means anyone who wants to look at him from a neighboring building can see him, including a duck. See, this man has "anatidaephobia", which is the fear that somehow, somewhere, a duck is always watching him.

Anatidaephobia was made up by Gary Larson in The Far Side, and isn't an actual classified phobia.

For anyone who suffers from anatidaephobia, being near a giant window is not a good idea, as the thought that a duck is staring at them through it will always be on their mind. And, in this man's case, a duck is actually staring at him, which only makes this absurd scenario in The Far Side even more hilarious.

7 Windows & Pogo Sticks Don’t Mix

Someone ‘Pogoed’ Right Through Their Window in The Far Side

A broken window and an empty pogo stick box in The Far Side.

This Far Side comic depicts nothing but an empty apartment building with a shattered window and an empty pogo stick box, and it's what isn't shown that makes the comic so haunting - and so hilarious. Obviously, the person who lives (lived) here bought a new pogo stick, and decided to play with it in their apartment. Then, tragedy struck when they bounced right out the window of the high-up apartment, falling to the ground, assuredly to their death.

Indeed, it seems pogo sticks and apartments simply should not mix in The Far Side, especially if there's a window involved.

6 Homicidal Treatment

Widows Offer Relief from Emotional Distress in The Far Side

A doctor being thrown out a top-floor window in The Far Side.

At "The Institute For The Study Of Emotional Stress", a doctor can be seen flying out the top window of the building, doomed to fall to his death. And it seems this was no accident, as someone inside the institute says, "Hey... I feel better already", implying that the doctor was the root cause of their stress, and by killing him, this patient was able to relieve that stress.

10 Funny Far Side Comics Focused on Surprisingly Dumb Scientists

The Far Side famously throws its absurdist lens over practically everything, including scientists. Here are the funniest 10 starring dumb scientists!

Homicide isn't a great treatment for stress, but that didn't stop this patient from finding the horrific (albeit hilarious) method effective with the help of a single top-floor window in The Far Side.

5 Trampoline ‘Rescue’

A Woman Jumps Out One Window Just to Bounce Right Through Another in The Far Side

A woman bouncing on a trampoline into a burning building in The Far Side.

A woman was inside a burning building, trapped on a floor that was too high to jump from safely. So, the fire department deployed the use of a trampoline to ensure her safety after she jumped. Unfortunately, after she hit the trampoline, the woman bounced right through the window of the neighboring building, which was also on fire. Escaping through one window meant her salvation, but since she wasn't secured on the ground, she met her fate by entering another window.

This Far Side comic is utterly hilarious, and even mirrors a sketch seen on The Simpsons (season 4, episode 3), and is an absolutely perfect way to actually make windows funny.

4 Beginning Dance

Beginners' Dance Classes Should Be on the First Floor in The Far Side

A couple taking a dancing lesson falling through a window in The Far Side.

A couple taking a dance class - specifically, a dance class for beginners - are shown falling through the window of the second-story dance studio. While these two will likely survive the fall, it's still going to hurt once they hit the pavement, especially if they get stuck with any of the broken glass from the shattered window. No matter what, this situation is less than ideal, especially when all these people wanted to do was learn to dance.

In fact, after seeing this horrible (though darkly funny) scenario play out, readers are left with only one conclusion: beginners' dance classes should only be on the first floor in The Far Side.

3 Death-By-Window

Windows Can Be Deadly Weapons in The Far Side

An old lady killing a window cleaner by opening her window in The Far Side.

An old lady opens the window of her apartment, assuredly just wanting to get some fresh air. Unfortunately, she lives in a skyscraper, and her window was in the process of being cleaned. When she opened it, the old lady accidentally knocked the window cleaner off his scaffolding, causing him to fall to his death. It's a tragic scene, to be sure, and one that could have been avoided if the windows that high up on this apartment building didn't open.

But, they do, and the old woman was just obliviously using the window as it was designed, meaning it wasn't she who killed the window cleaner, it was the window itself, which adds a dark layer of comedy to this otherwise tragic scene in The Far Side.
