The newest show on Apple TV+, The Afterparty, is the best mystery show on television right now. Only three episodes have been released since its premiere on January 28, yet it is already a hit. This comedy-murder mystery series is loaded with talent including Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Dave Franco, and more. With every episode, there is a new character's story of what happened to Franco's Xavier resulting in his death.
While the show is centered around the murder-mystery genre it is tear-jerking funny in every scene. From relatable awkward reunions to full-out music numbers about things like three dots in a text, this show is insanely humorous. The cast is comprised of comedians, but certain cast ' characters steal the show in the comedy category.
Zoe
Love Life plays Zoe in The Afterparty. Zoe is secretly ired by Aniq and separated from the intense Brett. She is very responsible, kind, and down-to-Earth as a mother, vice-principal, and friend.
However, Zoe seems to have lost herself a bit during the third episode when she yells out a profane line that leads Yasper to reply, "What a twist?! What happened?". The audience is left giving a sideways glance and reaction identical to Yasper. What happened to the usual Zoe? She has a fun side as people see in the first episode when she is roaming the school with Aniq, but wow, "What a twist?!".
Channing Tatum
In The Afterparty, two actors portray themselves on screen, Will Forte and Channing Tatum. Tatum is a comedic and serious actor but in this series, viewers see Channing in the first episode play a young John Oates alongside Xavier's Daryl Hall in a fictional Hall & Oates biopic of the hit 70s-80s Pop duo.
This scene with Tatum is brief but does not shy away from packing in loads of laughs. Tatum smashes a record on the wall and tells Xavier, "That right there is what we need...no, a smash hit!" His cheesy lines that are found in almost every musical biopic and fantastically horrible Oates wig and costume will make viewers laugh out loud in just 20 seconds.
Chelsea
While the wildly funny Ilana Broad City, her character Chelsea in The Afterparty is funnier. Chelsea is the former class president that fell from grace following an unknown St. Patrick's Day incident.
She has yet to tell her story but is slated to be told in the fourth episode. Having not told her story and having not many lines put her behind multiple other characters. However, Chelsea has several laughable lines and moments in the series. In the second episode when Brett asks her about Zoe's whereabouts she locks her mouth with an imaginary key which he unlocks but she replies that "it's woman code". The funny part is she has no idea where Zoe is.
Indigo
Of all the wacky characters in this series, Indigo is by far the oddest. Her weird style and unique observant personality make her hilariously peculiar. Actress Genevieve Angelson from Flack plays Indigo, a social activist that has a very artistic visualization of life.
Indigo is the first suspect to give a story of what happened. Her re-telling of events is shown in black-and-white film and seen as something from an Alfred Hitchcock movie. When she says anything, it is with a serious intensity and a tilted head glance. Danner perfectly sums up Indigo by saying, "I don't know what kind of weird art house movie is going on in your mind".
Walt
Poor, poor Walt. Nobody can seem to Walt but he went to school with all the other suspects and re all of them. Cruella, Jamie Demetriou's Walt could be shady, but so could just about everyone's character.
People sympathize with how Walt was ignored in high school however that is what makes him so funny. Walt says he was "never seen" and adds funny bits in the strangest of moments. In the third episode, "Yasper", during the song "One Shot Twice" and full-out dance number, Walt tries to break into the song to rap with Yasper and Aniq but is cut out by Yasper. Walt might not be seen by his classmates, but he is funnier than many of them.
Aniq
Aniq is one of the funniest characters in The Afterparty even though his humor is less in-your-face. He possesses intellectual humor as he designs escape rooms for a living. Played by the talented Sam Richardson who Veep, Aniq is a bit odd as is his humor but that makes it funnier.
His story of the night's events is imagined like a classic Nora Ephron romance film. In his attempt to earn the affection of his crush and classmate Zoe, Aniq makes his story more romantic. When Xavier takes Zoe to the party, Aniq tells Detective Danner that it's raining as he watches even though it wasn't raining. As storytellers, people always want to make it seem bigger than it actually is and Aniq does it humorously with little effort.
Brett
Actor Ike Barinholtz is a stellar comedian-actor with roles as Morgan in The Mindy Project, Hunter in Blockers, and various roles on MADtv. His character Brett in this series is no exception. Brett is an intense, hard-core man with a secret soft side to him. He is recently separated from Zoe but is still determined to win her back.
In his story and episode, "Brett", he depicts himself as this super-tough man that cares deeply for his family like Vin Diesel's Dominic in Fast And Furious. In his funniest scene, he is in a car chase with his daughter Maggie in a NASCAR car seat, handing her fruit snacks while telling her how much he loves her. His "word is his bond and that's the only thing that means a damn". Well, that and his family.
Detective Danner
If you are a detective that asks suspects to tell their depictions of what occurred as if it were a movie, then you are high on this list. Actress Tiffany Haddish from Girls Trip and Uncle Drew plays the hilarious Detective Danner. Danner is the unauthorized lead detective that has less than 24 hours to solve the case before another investigator takes it.
Aniq and viewers know she is trying to piece a murder together knowing that she needed tons of help to get out of one of Aniq's escape rooms he designed. Despite the deadline to solve this mystery, Danner is unfazed, cool as a cucumber, and eating fat-free popcorn with suspects. She may not have solved the case yet but for now, it's pretty funny.
Detective Culp
Detective Culp may not be the lead detective but he is the funniest detective. John Early who plays Search Party plays the droll detective. Unlike the other characters that get far more screen time, Culp only needs a little time and a couple of lines to put himself as the second funniest.
When they are examining Xavier's body near the water, Culp finds a hat. He yells out, "Can I get one of those little yellow things with the numbers on them?". Most would believe a detective would know the name. Moments later when he enters the house he tells the suspects to "get comfortable but not too comfortable like wool pajamas comfortable". Culp's lines and delivery are flawless and cause viewers to laugh well beyond normal.
Yasper
Apple TV+'s The Afterparty has a smorgasbord of comical characters, but Aniq's best friend and aspiring musician Yasper takes the cake. Yasper, played by Parks And Recreation, is a wildly entertaining figure.
At no moment is there an unfunny Yasper moment. He is not telling his story in the first episode but steals the opening parts of Aniq's story by being a funny, lovable wingman and best friend. In "Brett", Yasper helps fix the audio in the interrogation room while trying to plug his business without any business cards "because it's the future". Finally, his episode is a musically filled fun hour. Nobody is quite as witty and amusing as Yasper.
