Ranging from murderous cartoons to hilarious cops, fans have taken to Ranker to vote for who they believe to be the funniest character currently on TV.

Note: Ranker lists are live and continue to accrue votes, so some rankings may have changed after this publishing.

Peter Griffin

Family Guy

Peter Griffin in Family Guy

Although Peter can be a little unkind to his daughter, overall he is a well-meaning man. Unfortunately for him, his lack of intelligence can hinder his life, but it does make for some brilliant viewing.

Peter's usual boredom can be the catalyst for what gets him into trouble, alongside his outlandish general behavior, which has included him faking his own death to swerve a dentist appointment. Whatever each episode may entail, it's sure to have a whole heap of humor just from Peter.

Bart Simpson

The Simpsons

Bart Singing Simpsons Season 33 Finale

Bart is portrayed as a typically annoying young boy, with little regard for his sisters and even lesser interest in his school education. He hasn't had the best influence in his father, but despite his general behavior, there are glimmers of a softer personality and definitely plenty of humor.

While his rivalry with Lisa can cause altercations, there are some fantastic Bart and Lisa episodes which either show their love for one another or are just a barrel of laughs. As a seemingly fearless boy, there's nothing he won't try, including working as a bartender for the mob, or as an intern for Krusty's show. Nothing really goes smoothly for Bart, and his childish manner makes it even funnier.

Captain Ray Holt

Brooklyn 99

Slapstick or obvious humor often goes down well, but there's always room for the straight-faced comedy and Captain Ray Holt provides exactly that. From his first episode, it was evident that the character was going to be portrayed as a lot more stoic and with deadpan humor.

But that's precisely what makes Holt so funny. When up against the likes of Jake, their differences in personality highlight each other's hilarity. Always putting his position as captain first, Holt is able to bring a different edge to Brooklyn 99's comedic genre.

Randy Marsh

South Park

There are a number of South Park and it's clear to see why he has gradually become a central focus. Some of his best episodes may be completely ridiculous, but it never fails to amuse audiences.

Randy comes out with some fantastic one-liners that can catch viewers when they're least expecting it. He's also very honest and in fact, pretty brutal, especially to his son. When a comedy show wouldn't be the same without one of its characters, it's evident that they are vital to the overall humor of the series.

Sergeant Terry Jeffords

Brooklyn 99

Terry talking to a colleague in the precinct in Brooklyn Nine-Nine

As someone that often refers to themself in the third person, it's no surprise that Terry Jeffords is one of the most popular current comedy characters.

Terry has some lovely traits, which include being a great teammate and very caring towards his colleagues. But his kindness shouldn't be mistaken for not having a great sense of humor. Many of Terry's best quotes in Brooklyn 99 are absolutely hilarious, and being a good person just makes him an even better character.

Homer Simpson

The Simpsons

Homer as Jack Torrance in a spoof of The Shining in The Simpsons

At first glance, Homer Simpson isn't the greatest family man, is easily led astray, and has a constant hankering for donuts. Who'd have thought those three traits would contribute to one of the funniest TV characters?

Deep down, there is more to Homer. Various episodes have shown that he really does care for his family, but he just gets a little sidetracked. And it's those wandering moments that can get audiences laughing. He's a unique character and viewers just don't get bored of his personality or Homer's hilarious lines in The Simpsons.

Rick Sanchez

Rick And Morty

Rick's image perfectly fits his mad scientist ways, with his pale blue hair and eccentric personality to match. Being so clever causes Rick to become frustrated with conversations that aren't engaging, finding he can only really tolerate his grandson Morty.

Rick will get straight to the point when he's uninterested in what others are saying, allowing audiences to indulge in some side-splitting humor. Along with his experiments, he is easily one of the funniest characters currently on TV and definitely the funniest scientist.

Detective Jake Peralta

Brooklyn 99

Jake is one of the more lively and kind of immature Brooklyn 99 characters, but that's what makes him easy to laugh at. Although the nature of his job is serious, he always (somehow) manages to make it lighthearted.

In season 5, he can be seen to sing "I Want It That Way," with a lineup of suspects, wholeheartedly committing to the bizarre sing-along moment. The contradiction between his job and his personality really enhances the comedy and he deservedly has a spot as one of the funniest characters in Brooklyn 99.

Eric Cartman

South Park

South Park sail's close to the wind when it comes to its comedy, but always manages to stay on the right side by making the show simply hilarious.

It may come as a shock that Eric ranks near the top, seeing as he is rude, selfish and offensive. But with the skilled writers of the program, it's his obnoxiousness which makes him so hard to not laugh at. Eric's comic timing always hits the mark and when combined with sarcasm, he is clearly a truly funny character.

Stewie Griffin

Family Guy

Stewie Griffin hands on hips in Family Guy

Stewie is arguably one of the most bizarre, evil characters, but with a twist of comedy that makes him undeniably entertaining. One-year-olds are still in their baby phase, with not a lot of thought other than where their toys are.

But Stewie is no ordinary one-year-old. With more intelligence than most adults, he is a phenomenon that (unfortunately) frequently plots his own mother's death. However, without condoning his violent acts, his sinister streak is what makes him brilliantly funny. Not many babies could rival some of the funniest TV characters, but as Ranker fans have pointed out, he is at the top.
