The search for the next Lost has been happening for the past 13 years since it ended, and the answer lies in the Stephen King-approved horror series mystery TV shows have been branded the “new Lost” since, but none have succeeded in living up to this title as earnestly as From, an ongoing mystery horror series that more quietly premiered in 2022.
In a premise not entirely dissimilar to the mysterious plane crash series Lost, the MGM Plus show From is centered on a peculiar town that traps anyone who enters, which is terrorized by horrifying monsters at night and supernatural occurrences throughout the day. Praised by the King of Horror himself, Stephen King tweeted that From is a “wonderful concept, beautifully handled.” While many series have attempted to revive the thrilling themes, tone, and acclaim of Lost since its finale, the mystery-laden story of From comes closest to resurrecting the hit show’s essence.
MGM's From Is The Most Promising Spiritual Successor To Lost
As From season 2’s episodes deepen the mysteries of the Township and uncover the complicated pasts of those trapped, the series provides a mind-bending, thematically intriguing premise harking back to the peak of ABC’s Lost. While From doesn’t feature the iconic character-focused flash-forward or flashback sequences of Lost, the MGM Plus series brilliantly parallels its harrowing themes of humanity, conspiracies about the mysterious location they can’t escape, the supernatural horrors of their surroundings, and more philosophical questions about the fates of its characters. The deep dives into From’s ensemble cast of characters are slower to arrive, but they’re no less compelling or complex than Lost’s protagonists.
The primary reason why From so closely revives Lost’s sentiment is that some of the shows’ cast and crew overlap. Two of From’s executive producers are writer Jeff Pinkner and director Jack Bender, who held similar positions on Lost. From’s cast is also led by Harold Perrineau, who notably starred as Michael Dawson in one of Lost’s main roles. Not only does From share a similar cast, production team, and premise as Lost, but it also mirrors the latter series’ critical acclaim. Enhancing From’s status as the most promising successor to Lost, the MGM Plus show holds an impressive 92% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is actually higher than the 85% score for Lost’s series average.
Why From Is So Much Smaller Than Lost (When It Should Be Huge)
Although From has achieved critical acclaim and has a similar yet darker premise to Lost, the former isn’t nearly as well known or discussed as it deserves. This seems to primarily be due to the fact that From originated on Epix before becoming the Amazon-owned MGM Plus, a streaming service that is substantially smaller than platforms like Netflix, Max, Prime Video, Peacock, and Hulu. Meanwhile, ABC’s Lost aired during a primetime broadcast slot on network TV long before the streaming wars commenced. From’s smaller streaming service will likely continue to hinder it from gaining the audience traction it needs, whereas the series could perform better if it were under Amazon’s larger Prime Video label.
