WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for From's season 2 finale! With the Boy in White returning for a climactic scene in From season 2's returning cast, the Boy in White has gradually been seen by more characters like Tabitha, though whether he is actually good or secretly sinister remains to be told.
After helping Boyd and Sara escape the forest in the season 1 finale, the Boy in White returns in From season 2’s ending in a shocking scene with Tabitha. Arriving at the lighthouse in the hopes of saving the children she saw in her visions, Tabitha is met by the Boy in White, who speaks for the first time and tells her, “I’m sorry. I really am. This is the only way,” before pushing her out of the lighthouse window. While this may seem like the Boy in White has malicious intentions for From’s characters, the fact that Tabitha wakes up outside the town hints at his real purpose.
The Boy In White Helps Save From's Trapped Characters
The purpose of the Boy in White seems to be that he’s the guardian angel for those trapped within “Fromville.” The Boy in White often appears to those who need the most help and would actually be susceptible to seeing him. For example, Jim would likely reject the Boy in White as a source of help if he appeared to him, whereas Ethan and From's long-time resident Victor are imaginative and largely innocent, Sara already communicates with the forest, Boyd has observed the powers of the forest since he arrived, and Tabitha was already experiencing visions about children trapped in the lighthouse.
In the desperate times of those who seemingly have the greatest chance of helping save the town and unlocking the location’s mysteries, the Boy in White appears to guide them. While From doubtlessly intends for audiences to be skeptical of an unnamed young boy dressed in all white who hardly speaks during visions, he seems to actually be a spirit within Fromville that combats the forest’s sinister nature. Considering Tabitha finds him at the top of the lighthouse in From season 2, episode 10’s ending, it’s possible that the Boy in White is the “lighthouse keeper” who oversees the town and looks for ways to save them from From’s mysterious monsters.
For instance, after the entire town seemingly died when Victor was a child, the Boy in White likely appeared to keep him from being lonely. At the last minute, Boyd and Sara were saved by the Boy in White when he guided them to a faraway tree. In From’s season 2 finale, the Boy in White pushing Tabitha out of the lighthouse was what transported her back home. So far, the Boy in White’s actions have only helped From’s characters, though his brief appearances still leave much of his intentions ambiguous.
Was The Boy In White A Resident Of The Town Before Victor? Who He Really Is
The biggest mystery about the Boy in White that From’s “anghkooey” children, trying to save them and combat whatever caused his own demise.
Since From is helmed by Lost’s executive producers, it’s possible that the Boy in White’s role is similar to Jacob from the hit sci-fi show, serving as the ageless protector of the town. Much like how Jacob was searching for his successor as the island’s protector in Lost, the Boy in White could be searching for his own youthful successor in characters like Ethan and, at one point, Victor. If so, then the Boy in White’s version of Jacob’s sinister brother the Man in Black is likely the evil force from the forest that Sara refers to as “It.” This would likely mean that the Boy in White and his evil foil in From’s town were born there, potentially growing up at the lighthouse.
Why The Boy In White Only Appears To Certain From Characters
The Boy in White has only been seen by a few select characters throughout From seasons 1 and 2, which could be related to who he thinks has the best chance of helping the residents get back home. Those who can see him likely have to be open to the prospect of seeing him and accepting his guidance. It’s possible that the Boy in White only shows himself to those who he knows will play a role in destroying “Fromville” and resisting the nightmares’ influences. While he appears to be the town’s guardian angel, there could be some devious twists in store regarding the Boy in White’s intentions and chosen characters in From season 3.
