It goes without saying that How I Met Your Mother are two of the most popular sitcoms to have ever aired on television. While they were aired years apart and are set in distinct decades, fans love to compare the plots, characters, and hilarity of each of these sitcoms. Fans of these shows probably have their preference, but it's hard not to enjoy both of these comedic shows.
There's the age-old debates of Barney and Robin or Ross and Rachel, but have fans considered if their actual soulmate is a sitcom away? It's time to think about what would be the best crossover ever and determine which characters from these shows would flourish in a romantic relationship, and which would definitely crash and burn.
WON'T WORK: Ross & Lily
These two are both headstrong characters that like to make decisions. Together, they'd probably crash and burn to an immense degree. Fans can only imagine the arguments these two would get into, about dinosaurs or children or their friends.
They are both great friends and are often the voice of reason, but they also both like being the 'only' person like that in their group. If they didn't agree on something, there would only be immense chaos to follow.
WOULD WORK: Phoebe & Barney
These two are both just in for the fun and freedom of life. They're the least serious of their respective groups, but they're both surprisingly kind and totally friend-oriented. These two would have a ridiculously fun relationship.
They would have no cares in the world, and Phoebe would make Barney sort out his values, while Barney could keep Phoebe focused on moving up in her career. These two could be a match made in heaven.
WON'T WORK: Chandler & Robin
These two would probably push every button of the other. While they're both pretty well-versed in sarcasm, Chandler's constant jokes would probably drive Robin nuts. On the other side, Robin's serious and reserved nature would definitely not bring out the best in Chandler, like Monica has.
These two probably wouldn't be a huge disaster, but their certainly wouldn't be wedding bells in their future. Chandler and Robin clash in all the places that a relationship needs compromise.
WOULD WORK: Ross & Robin
These two would be chill and adorable relationship. Not only are they picture perfect, but their career ambition and selfless personalities would certainly make for an interesting and sweet pair. Plus, Ross' conviction would bring out the best and softer parts of Robin.
Ross and Robin would be a huge power couple, and their kids would probably be a perfect mix of intelligence, wit, and kindness. This might just be a ship all sitcom fans have been waiting for.
WON'T WORK: Monica & Barney
Monica and Barney might just be the worst couple pairing out of these main characters. Between Barney's spontaneous adventures, womanizing, and materialistic nature, Monica likely wouldn't last a day with this man as her partner.
On the flip side, Barney would definitely not appreciate Monica's ways of life -- especially with how she is very set in how everything is supposed to be. These two would crash and burn before any other couple on a sitcom ever has.
WOULD WORK: Joey & Lily
This might seem like an unlikely pairing, but Marshall and Joey actually have a lot in common. Also, kindness and selflessness of Marshall, he's fun and, most importantly, (kind of) ambitious.
However, he would step back for Lily to focus on her career, and that might actually be the best part about these two. Lily needs a ive man, but she's also fierce and bold, and Joey's sweetness would be a perfect match.
WON'T WORK: Phoebe & Ted
Phoebe's free spirit and Ted's planning would probably make them hate each other pretty quickly in a relationship. Phoebe is all about going with the flow, and fans are pretty confident that Ted doesn't even know what the 'flow' is.
They are obviously both kind and caring people, but their values and their outlooks on life couldn't be more opposite. From love to career to friendship, these two wouldn't be on the same wavelength about anything. Long story short, they definitely wouldn't work.
WOULD WORK: Rachel & Robin
While neither of these characters explicitly discuss their sexuality in the series, these two would be an incredible power couple. They're both strong, independent women, but they also care deeply about their friends and find comfort in them.
They could be each other's rock, while still encouraging each other to make it big in their careers and live life in an adventurous but comfortable way. These two gals would definitely be couple goals!
WON'T WORK: Phoebe & Marshall
These two might have a really sweet and fun relationship, but it's probably unlikely to go very far. That, and they definitely wouldn't accomplish much or bring out the best in each other.
They both need someone to ground them into reality and push them, and they're not that for each other. They're nothing that would be combative about this relationship, but their kind and free spirits might actually drive both of them crazy, and definitely wouldn't encourage a positive and growing relationship.
WOULD WORK: Monica & Ted
These two are the most 'serious' of their collective groups, and Ted's romance and Monica's maturity might actually be a match made in heaven. They're both goal-oriented and focused on their careers, but they also both definitely want a family and a strong relationship.
Their lovable and kind personalities makes them the 'host' or the 'center' of their groups and together, they might just be the power couple that all sitcoms would be lucky to have.
