For a casual player, the lore of Fortnite can be an inscrutable mess. It's dense with details, and if players skip even one content update, they can be left wondering what is going on. One of those limited-time events introduced Fortnite's Midas, one of its big bad villains. Here is everything players need to know about Midas - and his undead Shadow Midas variant.
In Fortnite's lore, Midas was the leader of a shadowy cabal of agents working for E.G.O., renamed GHOST after Chapter 2 Season 1. GHOST's motivations are as unclear, as are its loyalties. The current "good guy" in the game, Agent Jones, has an E.G.O. mug in his office, yet he works in opposition to Midas. Jones belongs to the Imagined Order, whose IO Guards are hostile to players and are often the target of weekly challenges in Fortnite. It appears there is a complex web of factions in Fortnite. Since Midas is hostile to pretty much everyone, Jones' position as good guy may be a case of, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Regardless of allegiance, Midas' evil plan was foiled when his base of operations was destroyed during Fortnite's The Device event. As with many of the game's bosses, players could earn a skin of Midas, turning them into the golden villain. This skin was locked within the Battle system and was not available as a store purchase. As his name suggests, Midas could turn items - including himself - to gold. The official Fortnite's Loot Sharks, spelling the temporary end of the bad guy.
Fortnite: Who Was Shadow Midas?
Midas returned in the form of Shadow Midas, an NPC boss players could down to earn the Drum Gun during 2020's Fortnitemares event. This resurrected version of Midas eschewed the gold theme in favor of a wispy purple aura. Unlike his "real" version, Shadow Midas was never made available as a playable skin.

While players eagerly await the return of one of the most popular enemies from Fortnite, the game continues to add in all sorts of new skins and crossovers. Chun Li and Ryu from Street Fighter were recently introduced to the roster, and the latest tease appears to be pointing towards a Fortnite Alien crossover.
