Following a recent update, Fortnite Creators can enable the new Proximity Chat feature on their custom-made islands. The launch of the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) means players can become creators by publishing their own game modes inside Fortnite. With a diverse range of experiences on offer, Proximity Chat gives creators the opportunity to boost the social aspect of their custom modes.

Proximity Chat isn't available in Fortnite Battle Royale or LEGO Fortnite, so players starting off at the best landing spots in Fortnite Reload won't be able to listen out for their opponents. Proximity Chat can only be enabled by creators on custom islands made in Creative/UEFN modes. It is also off by default, so creators will need to manually toggle it to enable the feature.

According to information from the Fortnite Creator Portal, creators can turn on Proximity Chat by going to Voice Chat settings in the Island Settings Menu. This will enable the feature for all players in that game mode. Creators can also tweak the Proximity Chat volume and adjust the sound's drop-off distance.

Unreal Editor for Fortnite can be claimed and ed for free on the Epic Games Store. The more beginner and -friendly Fortnite Creative mode can be accessed inside Fortnite itself as a mode.

Creators should be aware of a few aspects of Proximity Chat. If enabled, all players will have a visible new HUD element that displays who is talking. Most importantly, all reporting, muting, and blocking aspects still apply to Proximity Chat, so Epic can still receive reports and take action against anyone who breaks the Fortnite Community Rules. As such, rulebreakers shouldn't expect to get away with hurling abuse even if the Proximity Chat feature is still in Early Access.

Additionally, as the Proximity Chat feature is still in Early Access, creators should keep in mind that its implementation is likely still bugged. As Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 begins, creators will have the chance to Epic, and updates and improvements to Proximity Chat will be made.

However, Fortnite's new Proximity Chat is still a promising new feature, allowing creators more freedom to create game modes featuring distance-based sound as a key gameplay mechanic. As such, creators shouldn't hesitate to implement it and have fun to see how this new feature enriches new experiences.
