Shovel Knight has ed the conflict in Ubisoft's third-person action/fighting game hybrid, For Honor. The wildly-popular indie game hero has made plenty of guest appearances over the years since his smash-hit debut in June of 2014, and his arrival in For Honor shows that there is nowhere that Shovel Knight cannot dole out justice.
For Honor released in 2017 to generally positive reviews. Critics and players alike praised the innovative blend of third-person gameplay with combo-centric combat within a vast multiplayer arena. The largest issue many had with the game was its lack of dedicated servers. This made the online experience difficult to deal with, as many matches were plagued with game-breaking lag and disconnections. Through this, a solid community held strong, and earlier last year Ubisoft activated dedicated servers for the game alongside Rainbow Six Siege, For Honor has continued to provide content and fresh updates that have brought both returning players back to its battlefields along with new ones.
A trailer was released on February 18th by Assassin's Creed. Shovel Knight's appearance in the game shows that Ubisoft is not above crossovers with other developers, which bodes well for For Honor's future.
Shovel Knight arrived in June of 2014 after a successful Kickstarter campaign and immediately gained the status of instant classic. The 2D side-scroller boasts extensive platforming gameplay across multiple campaigns, and its 8-bit graphics and art style work as a throwback to the classic side-scrollers that inspired it. It has since been expanded upon by multiple pieces of able content, and Shovel Knight himself has also made a career of popping up in other games across the indie scene. The stalwart hero has appeared in indie titles such as Ghost Police and Brawlhalla, alongside a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
It was announced about a year ago that two spin-off entries in the series, Shovel Knight Dig and Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, are currently in development. Developer Yacht Club Games has risen to high levels of success since their flagship title's release, and this success has allowed them to begin publishing and developing IPs outside of the Shovel Knight series. It seems that Yacht Club is handling their success well by expanding upon their existing properties' fame while also looking to the future of their company, and For Honor players stand to benefit.
