Warning: This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again.

Foggy Nelson returns to the Franklin "Foggy" Nelson in Netflix's Daredevil series. However, Henson's Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock's legal partner and best friend, was only brought back so that he could meet his shocking fate on-screen.

The opening sequence of Daredevil: Born Again's premiere saw Foggy Nelson meet his demise at the hands of Wilson Bethel's returning sharp-shooting villain, Bullseye. Foggy's death was originally supposed to occur off-screen, so while it was still devastating to lose his presence in the series, at least we got to see Elden Henson briefly back in the role, paying homage to his remarkable Defenders Saga career. While Foggy could, of course, remain dead in Daredevil: Born Again, there has been rising speculation about his possible return, leading to some unorthodox theories.

MCU Theory Suggests Daredevil: Born Again Just Reintroduced The Soul Stone To The MCU

The Soul Stone First Appeared In The MCU In 2018's Avengers: Infinity War

Daredevil: Born Again episode 5, "With Interest," explored a self-contained story which saw Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock taking on bank robbers who intended to steal an orange diamond worth millions of dollars from a safe deposit box. This episode will presumably have little impact on the remainder of the Phase 5 series, though a new theory posed by Aidan Kelley of Collider suggests this small-scale storyline could be very important indeed. Kelley suggests the orange diamond in Born Again episode 5 could be a version of the MCU's Soul Stone.

First seen in Avengers: Infinity War and last seen in Endgame, the Soul Stone is different to the other Infinity Stones. While the others can be collected with ease, the Soul Stone demands payment in the form of a loved one, a soul for a soul. The Infinity Stone also seems to provide access to another dimension, Soulworld, where the souls of those lost can presumably be stored, such as Gamora and Morgan Stark in Endgame's deleted scene. The Soul Stone is the least explored Infinity Stone, so Marvel could benefit from bringing it back.

Marvel Studios Has Explored The Soul Stone Much Less Than The Other Infinity Stones

The Soul Stone Hasn't Had A Lot Of Attention In The MCU

To retain the mystery surrounding the Soul Stone, Marvel Studios chose not to introduce and develop it prior to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Conversely, all the other Infinity Stones had a great deal of attention, with the likes of the Space and Mind Stone even debuting as early as the MCU's Phase 1. While Avengers: Endgame saw the Infinity Stones destroyed by Thanos, it would be great to see the Soul Stone brought back, giving Marvel a chance to better explain its capabilities and reveal exactly how powerful it really is.

In Marvel Comics, the Soul Stone is unique among the Infinity Gems, as it has sentience, which allows it to collect souls and trap them inside Soul World. The Soul Stone also grants its power over life and death, which could have proved crucial in the MCU had the Infinity Stone been explored in more detail. Thanos, Smart Hulk and Iron Man all failed to use the Soul Stone to the fullest of its power, but perhaps Matt Murdock's Daredevil could be the first if this wild MCU theory turns out to be true.

The Soul Stone Provides A Way For Foggy Nelson To Return After His Tragic Daredevil: Born Again Death

There Have Been Calls For Foggy Nelson To Return Despite His Death

While it may seem outlandish, the possible appearance of the Soul Stone in Daredevil: Born Again, somehow returned after its destruction in Avengers: Endgame, could provide Foggy Nelson with a way to return to the MCU. Foggy's death in Born Again's premiere was a huge shock to audiences and a blow to the series, so there have been calls for Marvel to somehow reverse this harrowing event. There has been speculation that Foggy may have faked his death, or could be resurrected similarly to Elektra in The Defenders, but the Soul Stone's return creates another opportunity.

1 Detail From 7 Years Ago Makes Daredevil: Born Again's Huge Death Even More Confusing

There have been deaths aplenty in Daredevil: Born Again so far, but the biggest one is even more confusing when considering a 7-year-old detail.

During Daredevil: Born Again episode 5, Matt Murdock saw flashes of Foggy's life and death, which could easily have been connected to his proximity to the orange gem, which could turn out to be the Soul Stone. Foggy's soul could be trapped in Soulworld, which was glimpsed after Thanos snapped his fingers in Infinity War, allowing the Mad Titan to see his adoptive daughter, Gamora. If this is the case, which does seem unlikely, Matt Murdock could enter Soulworld in Daredevil: Born Again and bring Foggy Nelson's soul back into the MCU.
