Tom Cavanagh is hinting that fans can expect to see something totally unexpected from the new character he will be playing in season 5 of The Flash. The beloved actor is famous for his sense of versatility, and he's played several characters over the first four seasons of the popular superhero series.
The first season of The Flash saw Cavanagh cast in dual roles, first as S.T.A.R. Labs founder Dr. Harrison Wells, then as Eobard Thawne (a.k.a. The Reverse Flash), who had murdered Wells and assumed his identity using future technology. Season 2 introduced the concept of a multiverse to The Flash, and with it came Harrison "Harry" Wells, the sterner, less sociable Wells of Earth 2. The third season introduced several more Wells from around reality, with the Wells of Earth 19 - science-fiction erotica writer H.R. Wells - taking Harry's position on Team Flash. Since then, the show has introduced a Council of Wells and a rival Council of Harrisons, with many more versions of Harrison Wells being introduced to the show.

Cavanagh spoke about his latest character in an interview with EW. When asked about what fans could expect from the newest Wells to arrive on Earth 1, Cavanagh responded with his trademark snark. "I'm just doing my darnedest to get this show cancelled, one guy after one guy after one guy and somehow I haven't quite struck that note yet, but maybe this year. This guy will be filled with intrigue and deceit, fun, humor (and) intensity."
While seemingly conveying little solid information, Cavanagh's comments do reveal some small details. First, it confirms that he will be playing a variation of Harrison Wells, which was to be expected but still needed to be confirmed given that a new role after playing the character of Amaya Jiwe for two seasons. It also confirms that fans will be seeing an entirely new version of Harrison Wells, rather than the French Poet, German Snob, Steampunk, Wizard or Dystopian Cyborg Wells that have been seen in the past.
Perhaps the most important thing Cavanagh revealed is that the new Harrison Wells will be a fun and humorous character. Given that the fifth season of The Flash is shaping up to be something serious, with Barry and Iris' a murderous new villain, a new comic-relief character akin to H.R. from season 3 would prove quite welcome. Whoever the new Harry is, however, he's sure to be a hit with Cavanagh bringing him to life.
