Though the TV series Firefly barely lasted a season, its story continues to be told via comics, with the latest exploring the past of fan-favorite character Zoë Alleyne. Before she ed the Serenity crew and married Wash, she was a Browncoat in the galactic war for independence.

The Unification War is a nasty, brutal era of history. No one comes out the way they came in, and Zoë is no exception."

Zoe from Firefly is dressed as a Browncoat, hair much shorter, posing and holding a gun like a cool badass.

The event also promises a team-up of Mal and Zoë during a bank heist, suggesting they've always been down for a bit of thievery.

Boom! Studios Reveals Zoë's Backstory Before Firefly

Zoë is a taciturn character who has never been particularly open about her past. Fans know she has been working with Mal since the war, continuing to call him "Captain," and respecting his decisions even in the wildest of circumstances. This comic will surely be full of revelations about how Zoë became the woman she is at the beginning of Firefly, providing answers that the fandom has been waiting 22 years to learn. As portrayed by Gina Torres in both the show and the movie, Serenity, Zoë is a stoic badass, but with a good heart and an inner sense of right and wrong.

Those layers make her a favorite, even in a cult hit full of great characters. Artist Giovanni Fabiano praised Humphries' writing, saying, "As a fan of the series, this story captivated me so much that I was hooked until the end of the script, eager to find out what happened next." It's a big responsibility for them both to make a satisfying backstory for an important character like Zoë, but as they've already shown with their Malcolm Reynolds Year One miniseries, it's a burden they're more than happy to bear.

In addition to backstories, BOOM! Studios has also released continuations of Firefly, like the recent Firefly: The Fall Guys.

Firefly: Zoë Alleyne Year One #1 Variant Cover by Suspiria Vilchez

A young Zoe Alleyne holds her gun in front of her face, Trigun style, on the variant cover of Firefly: Zoe Alleyne Year One #1. The colors are a galaxy gradient of purples, pinks, and oranges.

Firefly is famous for being canceled far too soon, and even two decades later, fans have been clamoring for a continuation. While a Firefly revival is in the works at Disney, the entertainment industry is going through a lot of ups and downs, and, like the Browncoats themselves, this show has always been an underdog. Rather than waiting for more show, however, there are a plethora of great comics that have delved into character backstories, alternate histories, and continuations after the film. This space western inspired so many modern artists, and you can see that love this fall in Firefly: Zoë Alleyne Year One.

Firefly: Zoë Alleyne Year One #1 releases on November 20 from Boom! Studios.

Set in the year 2517, Firefly follows the crew of the Serenity, a smuggling ship operating on the fringes of Alliance space. Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) is a veteran of a civil war, bitter about having fought for the losing side and now making his living as an outlaw smuggler out among the distant colonies forgotten and ignored by the Alliance. However, after taking on paying engers, Mal finds himself caught up in a conspiracy likely to bring the whole Alliance military down on him and his crew.
