The long-rumored remake is real - Final Fantasy games are known for, and brings them to an entirely new setting. In the world of Ivalice, a complex, mature, political drama unfolds in a series of strategic battles, in which your choice of units and positioning matters every bit as much as the attacks you choose to use, and the enemies you target with them.
FF Tactics was an instant classic in its day, and was later ported to the PSP with a new translation, bearing the subtitle War of the Lions. Until this more recent remake, though, you could only play FF Tactics on smartphones - or if you still had your old PSP lying around, of course. Now, Square Enix aims to fix that with an updated remake of FF Tactics, including an improved UI, new story content, and extensive voice acting. Here's everything to know about the new Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.
FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Release Date
When FF Tactics Remake Comes Out
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is currently slated for release on September 30, 2025, just shy of four months away from its reveal at the PlayStation State of Play. It's expected to release on all platforms where it's available simultaneously (see below).
FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Platforms
Where You Can Play The FF Tactics Remake
Interestingly, the FF Tactics remake is getting a cross-generational release, at least on some consoles. It'll be available at launch on PC (via Steam), Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox Series X/S only - Xbox One players are out of luck on this one, I'm afraid.

This Overlooked Final Fantasy Spin-Off Is Way Better Than Most Fans Would Expect
Final Fantasy isn’t particularly well-regarded when it comes to its mobile titles, but one of them really shines among the series’ dark spots.
However, there are some differences between each platform's version. FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be available in a physical edition on PS5 and Switch only - players on other consoles can only purchase the game digitally. Presumably, the Switch cartridge will also be compatible with the Switch 2.
FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Preorder Details
When & Where To Buy FF Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is only available for preorder from a select few retailers at the time of writing - other online and brick and mortar stores should reveal preorder details soon. However, you can currently preorder Final Fantasy Tactics from Square Enix directly, or via Amazon for $49.99 USD. This only applies to the physical Standard Edition for PS5 and Switch - digital editions, collector's editions, and other platforms will have to wait.
All preorders of FF Tactics, regardless of edition or platform, will include a few bonus in-game items, as listed below:
- 10 High Potions
- 10 Ethers
- White equipment for Ramza
- Spiked Boots
- Mythril Knife
These are almost all decent early-game items in the original FF Tactics, so it's reasonable to expect they'll play the same role here. High Potions are slightly more powerful items than regular Potions. They're usually only available after completing a certain in-game event; preordering the remake apparently lets you access them a little earlier. Ethers instead restore MP, allowing characters to use their abilities more frequently in battle. In the original FF Tactics, your Chemist characters had to learn the proper abilities before using these items, but it's unclear whether they'll be usable from the beginning in the remake.
Up next are Spiked Boots and Mythril Knife. Each of these are the first upgrade in the original game's loot table; you start with the base equipment, then, when you can afford it, buy your first pair of Spiked Boots and Mythril Knife. They'll probably be relatively weak in the remake as well, but can likely carry you through the early game handily.

Final Fantasy fans who are trying out Magic: The Gathering for the first time at a Prerelease event may want to prepare before they arrive.
Finally, preordering FF Tactics also gets you a set of white equipment for your protagonist, Ramza. This appears to be purely cosmetic, and likely won't affect your stats at all, but it does look cool.
Also worth noting is that Amazon preorders of the FF Tactics remake appear to include an exclusive double-sided poster. One side shows all the jobs included in the game laid out in a rectangle around the logo, and the other side includes the job evolution chart as a quick reference for character development.
FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Version Differences
What's Different In The Collector's Edition
The FF Tactics remake has also announced a Collector's Box, only available on the Square Enix store. Note that the Collector's Box does not include the game, although it can be bundled in with it for an additional $49.99. The Collector's Box will run you $200 by itself, and includes a variety of different physical goodies:
- Art sheet set
- Chocobo mini plush set
- Zodiac Stones acrylic magnet set
- Pop-up art - "Outlying Church"
- Ramza Beoulve figure (Akademy Version)
- Special art box
The Collector's Box is not currently available for preorder, but is expected to become available via Square Enix's official website soon.
It's also worth noting that, regardless of which edition you buy, you'll be able to play two different versions of FF Tactics: Classic and Enhanced. Classic faithfully recreates the original graphics and gameplay, while you'll have to play Enhanced to experience the updated art, the new story content, and the voice acting.

I've Played Every Final Fantasy Game, And Square Enix Shouldn't Copy Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
After playing every entry in the Final Fantasy series and Clair Oscur: Expedition 33, I'm convinced Square Enix shouldn't copy it moving forward.
As one of the most beloved Final Fantasy spinoffs of all time, Tactics has long been due for remaster. Thankfully, this one looks pretty complete, and we won't have to wait too long to play it. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is poised to become the definitive edition of this classic RPG.
