When running away, there are a few times when it won't be possible such as boss fights for example. Another time when running is impossible is in the the fight against the Hell House must be done to advance the story. It's a tough one but running isn't an option here so beating it is a must.

Running away can be done in most fights and can be done relatively easily. The method is simple, simply run away. Yes, it's that easy. There is a catch to it though. When running away, there will be a message on the top of the screen that says "Fleeing" in red at the top of the screen. This is a sure-fire way to know that you're going to leave the battle. At this point, it's a choice to continue running or return to the battle with the team. If continuing, then the enemies will reset once the character has successfully fled. This has the advantage of giving the party a breather to heal, change equipment, or anything that could make the fight easier if needing to go back into the battle.

So what happens when a situation occurs that the team has gone into unprepared and can't leave the fight or beat it. The only options are to fall in battle and restart the fight or to quit the battle and restart from either the last checkpoint or battle depending on the outcome of the fight. In places like the VR missions, it's going to be leaving the battle and re-selecting it. If wanting to change equipment, it can only be done outside of the menu selection screen so preparation is going to be important before spending all that hard-earned Gil. A recap is there are no running buttons like the original Final Fantasy 7, it's simply running away so get those feet moving.
