Cloud Strife’s iconic Buster Sword weapon is often the subject of much humor and confusion among fans of Square Enix’s beloved JRPG isn’t exactly realistic, but now it has been shown to not be very consistent either.

Ever since the ex-SOLIDER Cloud Strife first stepped off the train in front of the Mako Reactor at the beginning of 1997’s Final Fantasy VII, fans have been poking fun at his trusty (and very large) Buster Sword in all of its incarnations, be they the original one most fans are used to or the multi-bladed, Swiss Army-style weapon used in the 2005 CGI film Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII. Most of these boil down to its unusual size or how he manages to weld the massive claymore with as much skill as he does – which is usually chalked up to the enhanced strength he received by being infused with Mako energy – but one fan has pointed out another, more inexplicable flaw regarding how the iconic weapon is supposed to work.

Reddit AeroRandy posted a humorous Gif questioning the logic of Cloud’s sword to the Gaming subreddit yesterday. It depicts the Buster Sword bouncing harmlessly off of a steel doorway Cloud and Barret are struggling to open during the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake… only for it to slice through steel debris like a hot knife through butter a mere five minutes later. Check out the post below:

Playful discussions like the kind sparked by AeroRandy’s Gif have cropped up in the days since the regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Easy Mode. Fans have once again found themselves emerged in the vast and mystical world of Final Fantasy VII, which inevitably leads to those fans humorously wondering how said world works.

It’s worth pointing out that Cloud seems to be wielding two different versions of the Buster Sword during the scenes in AeroRandy’s Gif, which could possibly explain why one can cut through steel and the other can’t… although this observation only raises a new question as to why Cloud would ever use a sword that isn’t as sharp or strong as its brethren. Perhaps he was conned at a weapons shop prior to the mission with Barret. Still, it’s truly a riddle for the ages, one that likely won’t be answered in either the current Final Fantasy VII Remake or its future installments.
