Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth has been available for PC for less than a week and it's already broken the record for the most concurrent players in a single-player Final Fantasy title. Although the title was released on February 29 of last year, the second installment in the highly anticipated remake of the classic FF title took nearly a year to make its way to the PC. It seems that players were more than ready for the title, as many s flocked to the title as soon as it became available on Steam.
FF7: Rebirth was released on PC on January 23. In that time span, the title managed to reach an all-time peak of 40,564 fans playing at the same time, according to SteamDB (spotted by Eurogamer). This unseats the two most recent titles, Final Fantasy 15 and 16, which each had a peak of 29k and 27k concurrent players, respectively. The success of Rebirth may push Square Enix to aim to bring the third and final part of the title to the PC sooner, a trend that it's already on track for as FF7: Remake took nearly two years to be ported to the PC.
Final Fantasy 7 Director Thinks Mods Are At Least In Part To Thank
FF7:Rebirth Steam Release Makes Waves
The success of the title may be due to players wanting to continue the tale of Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Barrett, and the rest of the team. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi thinks that the game is also seeing such a positive reception thanks, in part, to mods. Speaking to Automation Media, Hamaguchi said that he sometimes uses mods himself and understands the appeal as a PC gamer.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PC Review: A Crowning Achievement
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has finally come to PC, and it is every bit as good as it was on the console. Any changes are only improvements.
"I respect the modding community," said Hamaguchi. Mods, he says, can keep a title alive for a long time after its release, making them a huge part of releasing any title on PC. Hamaguchi cites series like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls as games that have enjoyed a long shelf life years after they're released largely because of mods. Hamaguchi continued, "New mods breathe life into these games, making players want to come back to them." So far, only cosmetic and performance mods for FF7: Rebirth have been released, but the game is likely to receive more attention from modders in the coming months and years.
Other Final Fantasy Games Are Still Pumping Out Numbers
Final Fantasy XIV Remains On Top
The only game in the series that tops FF7: Rebirth is Final Fantasy XIV, which hit a record 95,150 concurrent players three years ago, according to SteamDB. The popular MMO continues to pull in players thanks to regular updates and a system that allows newcomers to play for free for a large chunk of the game. The latest expansion, Dawntrail, was released on July 2, 2024, reinvigorating the community once again and raising the numbers back to near-peak levels of over 92,000.
As time goes on, the power of mods to keep players interested in Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth will be tested. The title is currently 30% off on Steam, making this a great time to follow Cloud and co on their adventures beyond Midgar.
