There's a chance a FF7 Sephiroth game could be coming, and the future of the Final Fantasy 7 franchise looks bright in general thanks to some recent Square Enix trademark filings that hint at big plans for the property. Final Fantasy 7 Remake released last year to overwhelmingly positive reviews, and though it was divisive among fans who wanted it to remain consistent with the original version's story, it ultimately pushed the game's world and narrative further - and created branching paths for future titles, too.

For those unfamiliar with FF7, both versions follow the story of Cloud, an ex-SOLDIER (think super-powered military) who gradually unravels a world-threatening plot from another ex-member of the organization, Sephiroth. Sephiroth is one of the most iconic villains in video game history, with his "One-Winged Angel" theme music and ridiculously long sword the frequent subject of memes and fan discussion. Sephiroth reprised his role as the game's antagonist in FF7 Remake, and he's since been added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a fighter too. Clearly, Square Enix is well aware of the popularity of the character - something that makes the company's recent trademark filing even more exciting.

According to a report from Gematsu, Square Enix filed trademarks for what appears to be two Final Fantasy 7 related on December 17, 2020. The fist, "Ever Crisis," seems destined to be related to Zack Fair and Crisis Core, though that's obviously not set in stone. The second is a little more interpretive, but suggests a FF7 Sephiroth game - or at least a story centered around him - could be coming. "The First Soldier" was trademarked by Square Enix, and in Final Fantasy 7 lore, that term could refer to Sephiroth's origins as the first Jenova-infused super solider in Shinra.

There's no denying that Sephiroth is a character that gets people talking, and his past has been under-explored relative to his impact on the franchise as a whole. While his origins are known and his schemes gradually come to light over the course of both Final Fantasy 7 and FF7 Remake, there are plenty of gaps in his illustrious career as a SOLDIER - and while the party is chasing him in an effort to figure out his plans - that could constitute an entire game's worth of content.

There's also the possibility "The First Soldier" could refer to the sub-title of the next instalment in the series of FF7 Remake games. Sephiroth could simply be more central to the story there, with the party unraveling what that title really means and how it applies to the new, weird chronology established by FF7 Remake. And, of course, and unexcitingly, these trademarks could amount to very little, and just indicate how Square Enix may want to market a future character or element of a game. Regardless, invoking the title of "The First Soldier" is something that will get fans talking - and, in fact, already has.
