For those who wondered where exactly the plot of Final Fantasy 7 Remake might go in the inevitable Remake Part 2, the PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, and its Yuffie-focused DLC INTERmission, offers a few clues. Final Fantasy 7 Remake shocked fans of Square's original Final Fantasy 7 when it made some fascinating and controversial changes to the game's storyline. While it still remains unclear exactly how those changes may affect the rest of FF7 Remake's plot, what is clear is that while many aspects of the story will stay mostly the same, there are bound to be some major surprises.
Some of these surprises were widely shown in trailers for INTERmission, like the appearance of the organization known as Deepground, which first appeared in the Final Fantasy 7 spin-off game Dirge of Cerberus for PlayStation 2. The appearance of that organization alone, and several characters who are part of it, could add some strange new wrinkles to the game's core storyline. The events that transpire over the course of INTERmission also give players a much better glimpse of where Yuffie will be coming from and what she might be thinking when she does eventually encounter the main party of Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII.
So what, exactly, does Yuffie's INTERmission DLC mean for Final Fantasy Remake Part 2? Potentially a ton, ranging all the way from new characters and deeper backstories to possibly confirming fan theories regarding Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its relation to the original FF7. Here's what happens in Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Yuffie DLC, and why it's a big deal.
[Warning: Spoilers For Final Fantasy 7 Remake and InterMISSION DLC below.]
FF7 Remake Yuffie DLC Has Big Implications For Remake Part 2
One major way the INTERmission DLC will inform Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is that Yuffie will have prior knowledge of Cloud and the core party prior to her actually ing their group. In INTERmission, Yuffie, along with another Wutai ninja named Sonon, team up with a chapter of Avalanche to attempt to steal a rare Materia from Shinra headquarters. Along the way, it's made clear that Tifa and Barret's Avalanche splinter group is not viewed favorably by other Avalanche cells, with the cell Yuffie is cooperating with expressing their distaste for how Barret and his group operate. Yuffie and Sonon even get a glimpse of Barret and Tifa returning to Seventh Heaven after bombing Mako Reactor 5. Yuffie expresses her for Barret and Tifa's explosive methods, believing Shinra is simply getting what it deserves, collateral damage and all.
This all means that when Yuffie does finally the main party in FF7 Remake Part 2, she will have much more prior knowledge of Avalanche and, more specifically, Barret and Tifa's splinter cell. But there's even more history between Yuffie and Avalanche than fans previously knew, thanks to the inclusion of a new backstory in which Avalanche and Wutai were, at some point in the past, opposed to one another.
Yuffie specifically mentions how she thought all of Avalanche weren't to be trusted, assuming "they were all like the ones I fought." It's never exactly clear what transpired between the two factions or why they would be fighting, but it could help to further explain why Yuffie might want to steal Materia from Cloud and the party in FF7 Remake Part 2, once she realizes that they are the splinter cell she's heard so much about.
What INTERmission Means For Sonon & Yuffie's Father In FF7 Remake Part 2
The fate of Sonon in FF7 Remake: Intergrade will no doubt play a large role in advancing Yuffie's character too. Sonon is mortally wounded by the Deepground operative Nero at the end of INTERmission, before his body is dragged off into the darkness. Whether or not the character is gone forever or will reappear in some new form later down the line remains to be seen, but no doubt his final act of protecting Yuffie will inform her character's story arc moving forward.
And that's not all when it comes to Yuffie's backstory. INTERmission also hints at some fascinating developments in the relationship between Yuffie and her father. In the original game, Yuffie's father serves as king of Wutai, with Yuffie and him disagreeing over the path Wutai has taken following their defeat at the hands of Shinra. However, this is quite a bit different than FF7 Remake's portrayal of him.
In the INTERmission DLC, Yuffie mentions her father is a lazy drunk who is actually imprisoned back in Wutai at the hands of a new government. She seems to believe that is where he belongs. That tidbit of information means fans should expect the Wutai portion of FF7 Remake Part 2 (or Part 3) to be very different from that of the original FF7, where Yuffie's father was still in control of Wutai.
What FF7 Remake INTERmission Means For Zack In Part 2
And then there is FF7 Remake INTERmission's ending, which shows Cloud and the party hitchhiking their way to Kalm with help from Choco Bill, seeming to confirm that the town is where Remake Part 2 will begin. Choco Bill's appearance here, along with the fact that Yuffie is seen riding a chocobo outside of Midgar in one of the DLC's final cutscenes, all but confirms his Chocobo Farm will likely make an appearance in FF7 Remake Part 2 in some form. As Cloud and the party head into town on foot, the camera pans away, only to cut to Zack Fair outside Aerith's chapel. He's contemplating how to approach Aerith after not having seen her for so long, eventually settling on simply saying "I'm back!" as he opens the chapel doors. Aerith, of course, isn't at the chapel, which is instead occupied with what appear to be refugees from the falling of the Sector 7 plate.
One of biggest questions fans had about Final Fantasy 7 Remake's ending was what it meant for Zack, who dies in the storyline of the original FF7 but is seen surviving his supposedly deadly encounter at the end of the remake. Fans have theorized Zack may be alive in an alternate universe, but INTERmission pours more fuel on the fan theory flames, seeming to confirm that Zack is indeed alive in FF7 Remake's timeline. Having Zack alive and following in the party's footsteps, and potentially reuniting with Cloud and Aerith, could be a major part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2. It seems the party's defeat of fate at the end of the remake has truly set the timeline free, and it is anyone's guess what kind of effects that will have on the story moving forward, especially if Zack is involved.
From more fully fleshing out Yuffie and Wutai's backstory to the seeming confirmation that Zack still has a big part to play, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's INTERmission DLC sets up all kinds of new possibilities for what the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 might entail. More appearances from Deepground are almost a certainty, and a much more complicated relationship between Yuffie and the core party seems a given as well. It's a good thing that INTERmission has given fans so much to theorize about, because the wait for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is likely to be a long one.
