Summary

  • The final chapter of the FF7 Remake series is already partially complete, but the game has not been formally announced yet.
  • The third title will focus on exploring a large portion of the map with Cid's Highwind airship, similar to the original game.
  • The game will conclude Cloud's saga with a reimagined experience, but the release date and console availability are still unknown.

A portion of the anticipated sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the final chapter in the FF7 Remake series by Square Enix is already complete, though there is still a catch to how the game will be structured. The third game is known to exist, as it will conclude the reimagined adventure of Cloud and his friends, but it has not yet been formally announced, nor does it have an official title. The game is being created, but should only arrive within a few years if the gap between FF7 Remake and Rebirth serves as an example.

Nevertheless, a massive portion of the future game is already done, as revealed by the game director, Naoki Hamaguchi, in an exclusive interview with The Washington Post’s Gene Park. The developer reveals that this was made possible because of the work put into the world design of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, a lot of which will be reused in the third title. The issue, which is much more of a work-in-progress than an actual problem, is how the map will have to be adapted to accommodate the landing and takeoff of Cid’s Highwind airship:

“I definitely want to address the same for what is likely expected from our experience with the Highwind to explore the world.”

All questions about FF7 Rebirth’s ending are finally answered. Here’s everything that happens in its final chapters, and how it sets up the sequel.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Sequel Will Boast Constant Airship Exploration

If the third title in the remake series is to follow the pattern set by the original 1997 game, exploring the map with the Highwind will likely be a key feature. In the final act of the original game, Cid’s airship was constantly used to navigate the map, going to new destinations and revisiting past locations.

Although Cloud’s adventure should initially take him to the northern reaches of Gaia in the third game, he and his group are likely to revisit some locations from the map in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, such as Junon. By the end of the original FF7, the entire map was explorable, and a lot of this was facilitated by hopping into the Highwind airship and quickly getting around.

As seen in Hamaguchi’s interview with The Post, the development team is intent on recreating that experience, though they are still figuring out how to redesign the map so that the vessel in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s sequel can land and take off in an orderly fashion. At the moment, the next game in the series does not have a release date.

In fact, it is not even known if the game will be released for the current generation of consoles or not.

The title is expected to end Cloud’s saga with a flair, as a lot is being reimagined, and not all events are playing out like they did in the original. There are also a lot of questions to be answered, but luckily Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is not the last game in the FF7 Remake trilogy – players just have to wait.
