Summary

  • Fast travel between Junon and the Grasslands in FF7 Rebirth is unlocked through completing the "Stuck in a Rut" side quest.
  • It's also possible to travel back through the Mythril Mines, although much less convenient.
  • Completing the side quest not only enables fast travel but also provides nice character moments and an increased bond.

There's a lot to do in the Grasslands area of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and it might quickly become tempting to follow the thread of the main story and leave some content behind to revisit later. Although FF7 Rebirth is an open-world game, the divisions between its zones can complicate the idea of jumping between different ones. It's easy to end up wondering if there's any way to go back after finishing Chapter 2 and progressing on to Junon, but the answer may not immediately present itself.

Traveling between the Grasslands and Junon for the first time requires ing through the Mythril Mines, a complicated diversion that would take some time to through even after clearing out some enemy encounters and solving environmental puzzles. For anyone who does want to put up with some heavy backtracking, it is possible to return to the Grasslands through the Mythril Mines. This is definitely more of a last resort option, however, and finding a way to unlock fast travel between the regions of FF7 Rebirth's map is generally more appealing.

Fast travel between Junon and the Grasslands is possible in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth; it just requires the completion of a side quest first. Anyone wanting to unlock the feature should head first to the Chocobo ranch in Junon, where a quest called "Stuck in a Rut" will be offered by the owner Gabe. Completing all the steps of this side quest enables a Chocobo Carriage service, which can carry the party between regions when accessed through a ranch.

How To Get Fast Travel Between Junon & The Grasslands

"Stuck in a Rut" can require a bit of work, although none of the FF7 Rebirth side content that's necessary is hard for an informed player. Gabe sends the party off to talk to his wainwright friend, who lives atop some heights that the party can't scale without some help. This can be found in the region's Chocobos, which are uniquely capable of running up the right sort of walls.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is out now on PlayStation 5, but now PC players may be wondering how long they will have to wait before it makes its PC debut.

The wainwright requests, in turn, that the party bring him some dried driftwood. This can be found by sniffing about with Chocobos not far from the nearby town entrance. Bringing three is the most thorough way to complete the quest, but even one will suffice to serve the basic purpose of activating the service.

The question mark prompts when Chocobos are near the driftwood, which is red instead of blue.

This can all be a bit of a hassle for anyone rushing to go back to the Grasslands, but it's certainly reassuring to know that the process is indeed there. Once the side quest has been completed, it's easy to access beyond that point, and the quest has the added benefit of some nice Aerith character moments and an increased character bond. Moving on past Chapter 2 might seem like it carries the risk of leaving the Grasslands behind forever, but there's no such finality for the early exploration of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
