Chocobos can be given custom race loadouts in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth so that you can win every race with a good strategy. Each individual chocobo has its specific strengths and weaknesses - some are faster, others tougher, and a few can turn on a dime. Equipment can further improve their base power, but more is needed to compensate for huge deficits.
Opponents and tracks will change depending on the grade and rank. This means it is good to have several possible setups to counter the specific competition. Different cool and unique Chocobo mounts can all serve in races. However, gaining all of these takes a time investment, either via grinding or completing many side quests.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Chocobo Racing Is As Well-Developed As "A Full-Fledged Racing Game"
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi discusses deg combat in a larger game world, new playable characters, and beloved mini-games.
How To Get Chocobo Race Gear
Most Chocobo racing gear is acquired from track shops throughout Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Most have the same selection, but other specific ones need to be perused at least once; the inventory will be added to the other subsequent shops. Gear includes helmets, breastplate body armor, and leg greaves.
Most gear is bought with Golden Plumes acquired by repairing Chocobo Stops in a region. However, Esther in the Golden Saucer will instead want Sylkis Greens. These are found only in the Dustbowl area via various side quests, including completing the swindling seminar quiz.

How To Find & Raise Unique Chocobos
You will always begin your racing career with Piko, one of the first Chocobos you meet in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. They are seen in the Grasslands and can be revisited even after Chapter 2. As you complete tracks and rise in fame, more birds will become available in the stables. Aside from Piko, the others are found in specific regions. Aponi from Cosmo Canyon is ideal for speed, and Selena from Nibelheim can push around smaller foes.
