Anchoring an epic franchise of shows on CBS, FBI has been one of the network's most consistent hits, and has already scored a season 8 renewal. Created by TV maven Dick Wolf and Craig Turk, FBI follows the Special Agents of the New York City field office's criminal division as they take on some of the biggest cases that the Big Apple can throw at them. Like most police procedurals, FBI relies heavily on a case-per-week format, but never misses an opportunity to explore the personal lives of the large ensemble cast.

Like most Dick Wolf TV shows, FBI immediately had spinoff potential, and the franchise was expanded into FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. Despite its expansive success, the flagship series is still the true heart of the franchise, and has been given special attention by CBS. While all the other FBI shows have been scoring yearly renewals, the main series was gifted a three-year order from CBS in 2024. This takes the suspense out of the future of the popular police procedural, and the Special Agents of FBI will return for not only season 8, but season 9 as well.

FBI Season 8 Latest News

A New Star Is Already Leaving The Show

Tiffany and Scola standing together in FBI season 7, episode 1

With season 7 continuing to air new episodes, the latest news confirms that a lead actor on FBI won't return for season 8. It has now been reported that newcomer Lisette Olivera, who is set to season 7 as Syd Ortiz, will be departing the show after only a few episodes (via Deadline). Ortiz was meant to be the new partner for Scola following the departure of Tiffany Wallace, but the newest member of the team won't be around for long. No official reason has been given, but some sources claim she was simply miscast in a role that calls for an older actor.

FBI Season 8 Is Confirmed

CBS Has Ordered 2 More Seasons

This decision guarantees FBI through season 9, which will air during the 2026-2027 fall schedule (barring any industry-wide shutdowns).

Unlike many other network shows which find themselves on the hot seat every year, CBS settled the question of FBI's future in early 2024. Even as Most Wanted and International were picked up for single season orders, the flagship show scored a three-season renewal all at once. This decision guarantees FBI through season 9, which will air during the 2026-2027 fall schedule (barring any industry-wide shutdowns). As such, FBI season 8 is already in the works and there's no question that the NYC Field Office will be back in action next fall.

  • FBI currently airs Tuesdays at 8pm EST on CBS.

A three-season order is exceedingly rare, but it really comes as no surprise considering the overwhelming popularity of Dick Wolf's shows. The legendary TV creator rarely misses, and he has especially found great success with police procedurals. As it stands now, the fate of FBI beyond season 9 isn't settled, but there's little doubt that the network will order at least one more season once the three-season order has run its course. Though the other series in the franchise are less certain, FBI is on a stable foundation that could see it stretch on for decades like Wolf's Law & Order.

FBI season 7 premiered on October 15, 2024.

FBI Season 8 Cast Details

Which Agents Will Return For Season 8

Like most long-running procedurals, the cast of FBI has changed quite a few times during its near-decade on the air thus far. There were even a few changes going into season 7, and that could suggest that season 8 will be a bit more stable in of cast swaps. Katherine Renee Kane will leave the show during season 7, and she won't be on hand in season 8 to reprise her role as Special Agent Tiffany Wallace. Her replacement was meant to be newcomer Lisette Olivera as Syd Ortiz, but it has been confirmed that Olivera will not return for season 8.

On the other hand, it's expected that stalwarts like Missy Peregrym will be back on hand in season 8 as Special Agent Maggie Bell, alongside Jeremy Sisto as Assistant SAC Jubal Valentine. The rest of the NYC Field Office team is expected as well, and guest stars are employed throughout the season as well, though it's impossible to guess who those will be at this early juncture.

The presumptive cast of FBI season 8 includes:

Maggie Looking Concerned in FBI

It's difficult to predict exactly what will happen in FBI season 8 for a handful of reasons. First, any overarching storylines will be laid out by the finale of season 7, and is therefore unpredictable until the season concludes. Second, the case-per-week format means that most episodes don't connect to any others and are usually standalone. This leaves FBI season 8 up in the air for now, and it won't be until the offseason between seasons 7 and 8 that details will begin to come out about future storylines.
