The hit FBI spinoff FBI: Most Wanted ran for six seasons on CBS. Debuting in 2020 as the first off-shoot of Dick Wolf's FBI, FBI: Most Wanted follows the Special Agents of the elite Fugitive Task Force who are assigned to capture the most notorious criminals on the Bureau's most wanted list. Unlike other spinoffs that essentially repeat the original's premise in a different location, Most Wanted stands apart from its predecessor with different types of exciting cases.

Based solely on the reputation of Dick Wolf's many TV shows, CBS wasted no time in expanding Wolf's latest project into a franchise. FBI: Most Wanted started as a backdoor pilot in FBI's first season, and less than a year later, it was given a full season order on the network. Since then, the franchise has been spun off into yet another series, FBI: International, while Most Wanted established itself as one of CBS' premiere primetime series. FBI: Most Wanted season 6 is the last for the series.

Though the entire FBI franchise was given a mass renewal by CBS in April 2024, that was not the case in 2025. FBI: Most Wanted was canceled in early 2025 after NBC saw a dip in ratings.

The Fugitive Task Force Operated For The 2024-2025 Season

CBS' faith in the FBI franchise was put on full display in April 2024 when the network gave all three series a mass renewal. The network also scheduled all three shows in the franchise for the same night, Tuesdays, during the 2024-2025 TV season.

The Main Ensemble Returned In Season 6

The entire main cast of FBI: Most Wanted returned for season 6. There were some cast shakeups before season 5, but there were not other shakeups heading into the season, or even throughout season 5. Dylan McDermott returned as SSA Remy Scott to lead the team, and season 5 newcomer Shantel VanSanten continued to play a major role as Special Agent Nina Chase.

The rest of the Most Wanted team returned as well, with Edwin Hodge set to reprise his role as Special Agent Ray Canon, Roxy Sternberg in her familiar role as Special Agent Sheryll Barnes, and Keisha Castle-Hughes as Special Agent Hana Gibson.

Most of the FBI: Most Wanted Season 6 characters could continue to appear in the franchise, despite the series' cancellation. Only Dylan McDermott's Remy Scott ends up retiring from his position, leaving the door open in FBI or its CIA spinoff for the other characters to continue to appear, especially Shantel VanSanten's Nina Chase, who is married to a character in the flagship series.

The Season Finale Offered Closure As A Series Finale

The FBI: Most Wanted season 6 finale operated mostly as a case-of-the-week for the procedural. Much of the hour focused on the case at hand, which involved rogue government agents being hunted down by the team. Despite that focus, because the series was given advance notice of its cancellation, the series also allowed closure for the audience for many of the characters' storylines.

In the final scenes of the episode, FBI: Most Wanted revealed that Remy would be retiring from the FBI and Barnes would be taking over as the head of the team. That settled the ongoing conflict between Remy and Abby concerning not getting to spend as much time together. It also settled the question of whether Barnes would be leaving the series to take a job in Washington, DC, giving closure to those two characters in a way the audience might not have expected going in.

Likewise, the series also revealed that Agent Canon is about to have another child, Agent Gibson is moving in with Ethan, and Agent Chase finds forgiveness for her father. It provides great touchstones for the characters if they are able to appear in other FBI shows in the future.

Will Season 7 Happen?

FBI: Most Wanted was canceled ahead of the season 6 finale, so season 7 will not happen. The cancellation came as a surprise to fans because even though CBS canceled both FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, it renewed the flagship series FBI and put plans for a CIA spinoff into motion.

The cancellation ultimately occurred, according to CBS boss Amy Reisenbach, due to financial reasons. CBS made the decision to cancel both FBI spinoffs and The Equalizer because the three shows were just not helping the network continue to make money. The series saw a 9% dip in ratings over the course of season 6 compared to season 5. The hope is that a fresh perspective, like the CIA-FBI spinoff might see more viewers brought back to the franchise.

Of course, Showrunner David Hudgins revealed to Screen Rant that if the series had been renewed for season 7, there were plans in place to continue each of the characters' storylines, including Remy's. Remy might not have retired just yet had FBI: Most Wanted been renewed for a season 7, but fans should not despair over the series ending since the other characters could still continue to guest star in the other FBI series.
