Koei Tecmo has revealed the release date for Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water have been cut and will be replaced by references to fellow Koei Tecmo properties Dead or Alive and Atelier, as previously guessed.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water was originally released in 2014 for the one of the last Wii U exclusives waiting for a Switch port or a multiplatform release until it was revealed during the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct that it was being revamped for modern systems.
A new Atelier Ryza games.
The new content coming to the game was also detailed in the trailer. It seems that the Princess Zelda and Zero Suit Samus costumes from the Wii U version of the game are gone, which isn't surprising considering that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is now a multi-platform release. Instead, there are new generic costumes that have been added in their place. Maiden of Black Water will also add a Photo Mode, as well as a new post-story chapter starring Ayane from the Dead or Alive series. The trailer also revealed that a "Fatal Frame 20th Anniversary Celebration DLC" is on the way, adding costumes based on the older characters from the Fatal Frame series and behind-the-scenes content for all of the games. A Digital Deluxe Edition with this DLC included is also planned.
It's not surprising that the Nintendo-exclusive content has been replaced with items from properties owned by Koei Tecmo, due to the game going multi-platform. The fact that a Dead or Alive character is getting a starring role in the game is more of a shock, and it seems that Maiden of the Black Water is going to have plenty of upgrades for fans of the original game to check out.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water will be released for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 28, 2021.
