The presence of young Dominic Toretto in Dom's brother, Jakob Toretto.
After ing a cyberterrorist in The Fate of the Furious in an attempt to keep his friends and family safe, Dom will be forced to encounter Cipher (Charlize Theron) once again as the villain reemerges. However, this time, she has help from Dom's younger brother, Jakob, a brand new franchise character played by John Cena. Not only is Jakob working with Cipher, but he's a deadly assassin who holds a personal vendetta against Dom. It's unclear how Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) fits into the equation, but Dom's entire crew will need to come together as Cipher and Jakob threaten their well-being.
To add to the theme of family, Dom's son Brian will be heavily featured in F9, seeing as Dom has seemingly settled down with Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) to become more like a family man. Coincidentally, Diesel's own son Furious 7 flashback sequence. The news indicates F9's plan to incorporate a new set of flashbacks, which have the chance to provide insight into Fast & Furious' biggest retcon involving the existence of Jakob.
Why Fast & Furious Needs To Explain Jakob's Existence
When the F9 trailer introduced Jakob into the world of Fast & Furious, the franchise created an undeniable retcon. Up to this point, the film series has nailed down the importance to family, especially showcasing how close Dom remained with his sister Mia well into adulthood. That said, the pair presumably had another brother this entire time but never mentioned his name. With Diesel's son playing young Dom, F9 will hopefully use flashbacks to explain Dom's rocky relationship with Jakob. Not only could young Dom's presence shed more light on the Toretto family, but it could also clear up why Jakob became the outsider with a dangerous vendetta.
Fast & Furious has taken the time to dive into Dom's backstory, but it looks like the franchise will need to go even deeper to successfully fill in some glaring gaps. If the film series elects not to go in that direction, the retcon would essentially turn into a distracting plot hole. With the franchise's history of retcons and timeline shuffles, it's more than likely the mysteries surrounding Jakob will be answered at some point. Though young Dom's F9 involvement remains unclear, all signs are pointing to the Jakob narrative. The fact that Diesel's son plays him makes the casting announcement even more special.
