The Far Side has imagined its characters in all sorts of dangerous situations. Whether in jungles filled with carnivorous animals or in the depths of the sea, The Far Side poses threats in all sorts of settings, including space, a favorite topic for creator Gary Larson.
From the moon to other planets to being feet away from the sun's flames, the characters of The Far Side, both human and alien, experience all sorts of danger, courtesy of Larson. While the characters themselves may not find their perilous situations funny, readers all over the world do, getting some major laughs out of the predicaments that the space-bound characters of The Far Side find themselves in.
10 "Now Look Where the Earth Is!"
May 22nd, 1984
It is easy to get lost when going for a drive, especially when the people in the car bicker about which direction would be the correct way to go. In The Far Side, going the wrong way can result in a massive detour, one that goes straight to the moon. A couple has gotten very lost while driving and ended up very far from Earth, in an entirely different atmosphere: the moon's.
Being stuck in space with no knowledge of how to get back can lead to all sorts of peril for the couple. The two people in the car being at each other's throats also does not help matters either. The woman may have a point when she tells Elroy, the driver, to change seats with her so that she can get them back home.
9 "Abducted by an Alien Circus Company"
It is bad enough that Professor Doyle has been abduced by aliens. To make matters worse, he has been abducted by an alien circus company, which spells trouble. Professor Doyle is forced to write calculus equations for entertainment in the center ring as his role in the alien circus company.

I Didn’t Get The Far Side, Until This Comic Made Me A Fan
This genius Far Side comic opened my eyes to what makes Gary Larson's wacky sense of humor work, turning me into a full-fledged fan at last.
It is a good thing that Professor Doyle has an impressive ability that can be used for circus entertainment without much fuss, or else who knows what the alien circus company would have made him do in the circus. However, Professor Doyle is not out of the woods yet just because he can complete complex math equations to entertain the alien masses, with the alien circus ringleader right behind him with a whip, ready to strike the moment Professor Doyle wants a break.
8 "Alien Student Drivers"
July 13th, 1986
Student drivers on Earth can be, at best, a minor annoyance on the road and at worst, a full-on danger. Aliens are not all that different, evidently, as seen in The Far Side. Alien student drivers are seen driving their UFO, panic clear on their green faces, as they drive quickly away from Earth, where they have clearly caused some trouble, given all the detritus wrapped around the spacecraft.
The student drivers in space tend to put everyone else, regardless of home planet, in danger, being a threat to the galaxy all while learning how to drive, which is a lot of pressure even for an alien. After the havoc this particular alien driver wreaks on Earth, they are clearly a long way from getting their drivers' license.
7 "Picking Up Litter"
June 12th, 1988
A gigantic alien picks up litter, like a good citizen, on the moon. Unknowingly, he mistakes the lunar module for trash and picks it up with his sharp stick. Hopefully no one was in that lunar module, or it would be lights out for them. An unexpected peril of space, aliens picking up trash can be a good deed for the alien, but the possible end of the line for any humans who are visiting other planets and moons in The Far Side.
The sheer size of the alien is enough to make someone scared for their safety, as they could be squashed like a bug if this alien does not look where he is stepping. Giving him a long sharp stick to pick up any debris he finds on the floor makes the alien all the more dangerous, even if he does not know it.
6 "USA"
1980
Two astronauts, peeking from behind a lunar crater, see that an alien has "heart eyes" for their landing gear. A possible reason for the attraction that the alien feels to the USA landing gear is that they are both of similar shape, being two of a kind in the alien's mind.
There are a lot of things to be scared of in space, but an alien falling in love with human spacecraft likely did not rank highly among their fears.
With the aircraft needing to leave sooner or later, this Far Side alien is in for some major disappointment, as it wouldn't be good for the astronauts' mission if they couldn't separate the alien from their module. Seeing that the alien has taken a real shine to their spacecraft, the two astronauts may be out of options for their way back home if the alien refuses to let the landing gear go. There are a lot of things to be scared of in space, but an alien falling in love with human spacecraft likely did not rank highly among their fears.
5 "Picnic"
April 17th, 1982
Having a picnic can be a nice way to spend a day. While this may be true on Earth, it is also true out in space. However, The Far Side, picnics do not always go to plan, thanks to some pesky space explorers. A lunar landing rocket ruins a picnic for an alien, dousing the alien in smoke and flames before it smashes on top of the alien and its nicely prepared picnic.
Being taken out by a lunar module is apparently an all-too-real (and perilous) aspect of life in space in The Far Side. Usually, aliens are the ones who pose a threat to humans when in space, but this comic shows the opposite, with the human actually being the one to put the alien in danger for a change. To be fair, the human does not intentionally ruin the aliens' picnic; they're just oblivious.
4 "Astronaut Tree"
November 16th, 1985
Just as an astronaut lands on a moon or another planet, the first sight they are met with is a very hungry alien eating astronauts from a plentiful astronaut tree. It eats an astronaut like a human would eat an apple from an apple tree, so things do not bode well for this astronaut's mission. Astronaut-eating aliens are one serious space safety threat, something that this astronaut wished they knew before they took on this mission.
It is pretty bad luck that the planet that this astronaut lands on features the naturally-grown food of astronauts, making this strip's events a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It would be like if someone came from a planet where the citizens were slices of pizza, spelling danger for the newbie to the planet in The Far Side.
3 "Feldman Must Be Freaking Out"
April 26th, 1993
In a space mission, astronauts were tasked with making with a many-armed race of aliens. They are successful in achieving their objective, but not without emotionally scarring poor Astronaut Feldman, who has a fear of eight-legged spiders, let alone a multiple-armed alien. Feldman's peers comment on the momentous occasion and that Feldman's state of mind is probably not the best right now as he is embraced by the alien.

10 Far Side Comics We Really Wish Had Sequels
These Far Side comics would benefit from receiving sequels that could tie up their loose ends, building upon the existing jokes in new ways.
One of the downsides of space is alien creatures that may resemble the scary and terror-inducing creepy crawlies of Earth, as this comic strip illustrates. Unfortunately for Feldman, the aliens are highly reminiscent of spiders, being an even bigger version of the arachnids, since the alien is about the same height as Feldman.
2 "We Waited and Waited..."
June 29th, 1981
The Far Side has a habit of transforming historical events, making them go a little different in its own topsy-turvy version of the world. One such historical moment that gets The Far Side treatment is the moon landing, where things end a lot worse thanks to some truly impatient astronauts. After he sticks the American flag on the moon's surface, Astronaut Henry finds that there is a note waiting for him, and it is not good.
His fellow astronauts waited for Henry for a really long time, but not long enough, because they were so impatient that they decided to leave him there. With no one else to reach out to for help - as well as having no food, water, or shelter - this astronaut is stuck in one very sticky situation.
1 "Those Are My Sunglasses You're Wearing"
September 7th, 1994
Two astronauts get sucked into the gravitational field of the sun, without any course of action to get out of this lethal mess. Before they die, one of the astronauts makes his co-pilot very aware that he knows that he stole his sunglasses, which he's wearing to shield hs eyes from the ever-approaching sun.
The astronaut figured that since he was going to die soon anyway, he might as well get the sunglasses thievery off his chest. Flying directly into the sun has to be the biggest peril of space that The Far Side has ever shown. As high-stakes as this scenario may be, it does not mean that people are willing to just forgive and forget when their sunglasses have been stolen from them and flaunted right in their face.
