The Far Side doesn’t feature a main character or any semblance of long-form continuity.

The things that make The Far Side stand out are what make it so popular, especially the fact that it changes its characters with every ing comic. That difference from other iconic comic strips (like The Far Side is able to feature some truly wacky subjects, like animals, aliens, trees, bugs, trains, cowboys, and even God Himself. In fact, there’s such a wide variety that there’s no way fans have seen them all. And so, here are 15 Far Side comics fans may have overlooked, and need to read ASAP.

15 Not Even Cows Can Avoid a Juicy Burger in The Far Side

A cow grilling burgers in The Far Side.

An anthropomorphic cow named Jessy is grilling burgers outside on the grill, when Jessy's neighbors approach in utter disgust. The other cows can't believe that Jessy is grilling burgers, calling Jessy sick for doing such an unspeakable thing. Apparently, these are beef patties (as opposed to some other kind of meat that might be acceptable in the cow community), which means Jessy is a cannibal, and the other cows have every reason to be upset.

14 The Far Side Takes Readers to a 'Gentlemen's Club'... for Bugs

A crowd of bugs watching a bug strip off a cocoon in The Far Side.

A crowd of bugs is watching a female bug on a stage inside a 'gentlemen's club' who is wrapped in a cocoon, and is slowly 'stripping' the cocoon from her body as the crowd cheers. The joke here is hilariously obvious, and incredibly weird, as it throws readers into a 'gentlemen's club' for bugs, and even offers fans an alternative to someone taking off their clothes on stage, as this bug is emerging from a cocoon for the enjoyment of a crowd.

13 God Uses His Omniscience to Win at Game Shows in The Far Side

God competing on a game show in The Far Side.

God has decided to be a contender on a game show, and by the looks of things, He's absolutely dominating the competition. This is a trivia-based game show, and the person who says the correct answer to any given question the fastest gets the point. Obviously, God is omniscient, and is quite literally famous for being 'All-Knowing'. So, He's decided to flex that particular aspect of His omniscience to destroy the competition on a game show, which is as utterly absurd as it is absolutely hilarious.

12 Cowboys Can ACTUALLY Ride Into the Sunset in The Far Side (but They Shouldn't)

A cowboy on fire after riding into the sunset in The Far Side.

A cowboy named Will Hawkins has suffered some serious burns (indeed, he's still on fire) and is being dragged into a saloon by his friend, who is screaming about how Will "tried to ride into the sunset". It seems Will was successful, and actually rode into the sunset, which is something that shouldn't be possible but can somehow happen in The Far Side. This joke is a hilarious play on the common trope of cowboys 'riding into the sunset' at the end of a Western film, and the comic clearly takes it way too literally.

11 Babies Become Airplanes When The Far Side Takes a Figure of Speech Too Literally

Pilots flying giant babies in The Far Side.

Two pilots are sitting on the nape of a giant baby's neck while other giant babies are flying overhead, each one with their own set of pilots controlling them. These two pilots (with their baby still on the runway) are gearing up for liftoff, ensuring that everything is in order before doing so. When they're finally ready, one of the pilots says to the other, "let's get this baby off the ground". Calling an inanimate object (like an airplane) "baby" is a common figure of speech, but The Far Side made it hilariously literal.

10 Killing Trees is Much More Serious in The Far Side

A tree's soul being taken to heaven by two angels in The Far Side.

A lumberjack holding a chainsaw is standing next to a tree that he just cut down, and he's absolutely dumbfounded by what he's witnessing. The soul of this tree is floating out of the trunk, with two angels greeting the soul before bringing it up to heaven. The idea that trees actually have souls isn't just hilarious, but also makes the act of cutting down trees way more serious - something this lumberjack will assuredly consider the next time he uses his chainsaw.

9 Divorce Has Never Been Funnier Than with Bunnies in The Far Side

A bunny drinking at his local bar in The Far Side.

A bunny is sitting at his local bar, drinking his problems away, as he's speaking with the bartender and the other animal patrons. The bunny is complaining about his child- payments, implying that he's not only divorced, but that he has a ton of children. This is a play on real-world rabbits, who famously make lots of children (there's even a decidedly inappropriate saying to that effect). Usually, subjects like divorce and child- are serious matters, but they've never been funnier in The Far Side.

8 Far Side Aliens Make a Hilarious First Impression

An alien falling out of his ship in The Far Side.

An alien spacecraft lands on Earth, and the extraterrestrials within plan to reveal themselves to humanity for the first time. They want to instill a sense of wonder and awe in the humans upon making themselves known, but that completely fails when one of the aliens trips and falls down the flight of stairs extending from the ship. These aliens had one chance to make a certain kind of first impression, and one of them blew it for the rest of them in the funniest way.

7 Smoking, Not an Asteroid, is What Killed the Dinosaurs in The Far Side

Dinosaurs smoking cigarettes in The Far Side.

A small group of three dinosaurs are hanging out behind a tree, and each one of them is smoking a cigarette - and it seems they aren't the only ones. The caption of this comic reads, "The real reason dinosaurs became extinct", indicating that smoking was so widespread during the age of dinosaurs that it was the sole cause of their extinction. This is a solid anti-smoking PSA, but the idea that smoking is what killed the dinosaurs is hilariously absurd.

6 Mummies are Wrapped-Up Like Christmas Presents in The Far Side

A mummy with a little bow on top of his head in The Far Side.

After an Egyptologist opens up a sarcophagus, he finds a mummy inside, and begins examining what he's found. While it's a subtle addition to an otherwise fairly normal depiction of a mummy, readers can see a little bow tied on top of the mummy's head. It's as if the Ancient Egyptians who wrapped the mummy were expecting them to be found, and wanted to make it seem like they were leaving future Egyptologists a little present with every corpse.
