Will Fallout Match The Last Of Us' Success?

While some attention may be on whether Joy and Nolan's first post-Westworld project proves to be worthwhile, the bigger focus for Fallout will be how it factors in to the recent trend of video game adaptations. Following years of varying critical and commercial reactions, the genre has mostly enjoyed success on both the big and small screens in recent years, with the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie dominating the box office. More specifically, all eyes will be on whether it will live up to the recent acclaim HBO's The Last of Us enjoyed in season 1, whose reviews set a high bar for future TV game adaptations.

It was recently confirmed that The Last of Us season 2 would begin filming on February 12, 2024, just over one year after season 1 premiere.

The Fallout trailer does look to be a promising follow-up to the HBO hit and continuation of the video game adaptation success. While creating an original story for the show, unlike The Last of Us' direct adaptation of its source material, Prime Video's show is taking a unique path by keeping it rooted in the world of the Bethesda games, thus inviting the likes of the Brotherhood of Steel to appear. It also leaves the door open for more familiar elements to appear, including such behemoths as Deathclaws or extensions of the factions, the Enclave and the New California Republic, should the show be set within the Southwest United States.

The other major vote of confidence in the Fallout show trailer is its overall tone. Between its Nat King Cole track to the darkly humorous moments of dogs devouring radiated cockroaches and bloody violence surrounding Goggins' Ghoul, it's clear that Joy and Nolan looked to the more recent games from Todd Howard in crafting the overall atmosphere of the show, matching the unique approach to the post-apocalypse of its source material. With a wealth of lore to pull from and a seemingly massive budget from Prime Video, Nolan, Joy and showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner seem on track to match The Last of Us' success, if not even sur it.

Fallout begins streaming on Prime Video on April 12.
