Amazon Prime's Fallout TV series takes place after the events of all the Fallout video games in 2296, expanding the timeline even further. Since the Fallout franchise hasn't touched this time period to date, the show was granted a great level of creative freedom. This has enabled Fallout to include many exciting things from the games while also creating something entirely new that doesn't break canon.

Its placement in the timeline in relation to the games could be of even greater relevance in a potential Fallout season 2. Since its setup in the series finale pointed to New Vegas being explored, being set after all the games puts the show in a position to reference what went on in Fallout: New Vegas as events that already happened. That could, in turn, create new opportunities for the show, especially since that means it could explore the current activities of existing characters and factions from Fallout: New Vegas.

Where The Fallout TV Show Takes Place
Fallout's show puts it close to the setting of the original game
Like the first video game in the franchise, the Fallout TV series takes place in post-apocalyptic southern California. But though this is miles away from Fallout 3's Washington D.C. and Fallout 4's Boston, the show still boasts the familiar, worn-down and destroyed aesthetic of the Fallout video games. However, the buildings, vaults, and society look slightly different because a lot could have changed in that time frame, combined with the difference in geography.

Fallout Show's Power Armor Suit Is A Big Sigh Of Relief For The Live-Action Adaptation
Amazon Prime Video's Fallout show has revealed a first look at its power armor, and it should be a good sign for cautiously optimistic fans.
What The Fallout Show Creators Have Said About The Timeline
After the release of Fallout's official trailer, one of the co-showrunners of Prime Video post-apocalyptic drama series — Graham Wagner — discussed the video game adaptation's timeline. His comments provided context on where Fallout fits in the canon. Regarding the Fallout TV show's timeline compared to the games, Wagner explained:
"It's set in the world of Fallout, but it's a new story that comes, sort of, after the events we've seen. So it really is, the show is built on like 25 years of creativity and thinking and building. And we sort of thought the best thing to do is to continue that, versus retread it. Because that's sort of what has worked with Fallout over the years. It's traded hands, it's changed, it's been altered, and it's a living thing. And yeah, we kind of felt like we ought to take a swing at trying to build a new piece on top of all of that."
The writers and producers behind Prime Video's post-apocalyptic drama series used the 25-year history of the video games to build their own world for the show. So, while the story in the adaptation is a new one in the franchise, its timeline is still inspired by and based on the original games. Ultimately, the Fallout TV series is a continuation rather than a reboot or reimagining.
