  • Tax credits are not a guarantee, but Fallout's massive budget increases the likelihood of a second season.

Fallout season 2 seems likely after a major production update. Based on the Bethesda video game franchise, the Prime Video series is set 219 years after an apocalyptic nuclear exchange as a young Vault Dweller named Lucy leaves her home behind and ventures into the unforgiving Wasteland filled with radiation, mutants, and bandits. The show's cast includes Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Johnny Pemberton, Dale Dickey, Sarita Choudhury, and Michael Emerson.

Now, days before the Fallout release date, a production update has made season 2 seem much more likely. According to Deadline, Fallout season 2 appears to be assured after receiving $25 million in tax credits from California. However, the show has not yet been officially renewed by Prime Video.

The Fallout show is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States. Although the main action takes place 219 years later, the past is crucial.

Is Fallout Season 2 Happening?

The $25 million in tax credits from California is just the latest sign that Fallout season 2 is happening after some recent comments from co-showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. In an interview, Wagner revealed there are hopes to make a second season and said that season 1's finale will set the stage for more adventures. More recently, in an interview with Screen Rant, the showrunners were asked if a potential Fallout season 2 would be an anthology, similar to the video games, though they didn't have a definitive answer.

Now, the massive tax credit from California is just the latest indication that Fallout season 2 will happen. The $25 million sum is one of the largest ever allotted by the state of California for a relocating series considering the Fallout show's massive budget, with season 1 costing approximately $153 million that was filmed across New York, Utah, New Jersey, and Namibia. Fallout season 2 is one of a dozen shows receiving tax credits for relocating to California, with others including NCIS: Origins, The Pitt, Dr. Odyssey, and Grotesquerie.

However, receiving tax credits, even those as substantial as the Fallout show, does not guarantee that season 2 will happen. These credits are contingent on meeting certain deadlines, and several productions, such as Citadel season 2, also from Prime Video, have withdrawn from California's tax credit program despite prior approval. However, these credits can significantly impact whether a project moves forward. For now, Fallout season 2 appears to be assured thanks to the $25 million in California tax credits, though its likelihood will become clearer once season 1's viewership numbers are available.

Fallout premieres April 11 on Prime Video.
