Given the popularity of the games and the success of fellow video game adaptations such as The Last of Us, the series will likely do well when it hits Prime Video next week. It also will not have a paucity of content on which to base itself for a sophomore effort. Season 2’s chances, however, will hinge on the success of the season 1 in of reception and viewership.

In adapting the video game series, the creative team made a critical decision to develop an original story. The main characters are original to the Prime Video show, while they are centered around Purnell’s Lucy. These characters will navigate some familiar elements of the Fallout game universe, including the Brotherhood of Steel, but will overall follow an original plot. Fallout will also share a universe with the games but still explore a different city not already established in the lore.

Adapting Fallout to honor the games while adding a separate story opens the door for season 2. This gives the showrunners and writers a choice to either follow Lucy’s narrative through another season or reinvent itself with a new cast in season 2. Secondly, it increases the chances that the Prime Video show will appear to a wider audience beyond just lovers of the games.
