Fallout 4 has plenty of side quests to keep any Sole Survivor busy while they should be looking for Shaun, and one of the creepiest and most atmospheric can be found in Salem's Museum of Witchcraft. The museum is located in the northeast of the Commonwealth and certainly lives up to its name, as the whole building has a suitably spooky feeling. However, all is not right at this tourist attraction, and rather than have a quiet tour of the exhibits, the Sole Survivor will have to make a difficult choice.

Approaching the museum, the Sole Survivor will find the door chained from the other side, and checking the perimeter of the building will come across the body of a Gunner mercenary, Private Hart. Listening to Hart's holotape will begin the quest weird Fallout 4 side quest, with some great triggered scares to build the tension as the building is explored.

Where To Find The Pristine Deathclaw Egg

Getting Past Mommy Deathclaw Can Be Tough

As the Sole Survivor travels through the museum, it is clear that they are not the only one in the area, and Fallout 4 companions will have comments about the noises from the floor above. The building itself has a very linear path, allowing all rooms to be properly investigated for loot, and there is plenty of great junk to be found, as well as a Grognak comic and an overdue library book. Finally, the path will lead upstairs, where the source of the strange sounds is revealed to be a deathclaw.

The type of deathclaw encountered will depend on the Sole Survivor’s level. At level 24, I fought a savage deathclaw, but at higher levels, I’ve found albinos and chameleons too.

While it’s possible to sneak past the deathclaw with high enough Stealth, most Sole Survivors will need to be defeated in order to reach the next quest objective. Deathclaws are never an easy fight, and it is very easy to get cornered during this encounter. Although there is a missile launcher on a dead Gunner at the doorway to the deathclaw room, I don't recommend it here, as its slow reload time will be a hindrance. Packing plenty of Stimpaks and ammo, along with a tanky companion like Danse or Strong, is more than enough to take down any deathclaw.

What Happens When You Take The Egg To Wellingham?

Head Back To Diamond City For A Reward

The pristine deathclaw egg will be on the ground next to the body of Sergeant Lee, and a holotape that will explain how and why the Gunners got into this mess. Lee will mention Wellingham, the robot bartender in Diamond City, as the client, and one of the options for the egg is to finish the Gunner's contract on their behalf. Wellingham will be waiting outside the Colonial Taphouse, overlooking Diamond City's market, and will comment on how long he's been waiting for the egg to be delivered.

Fallout 4’s Survival Mode changes a number of things about the gameplay, but one important change makes previously terrible items very useful.

Wellingham will initially offer 200 caps for the egg. However, there are three Speech checks that can be ed up to 300, 400, and then finally 500 caps. He will also give Wellingham's Recipe, which adds Deathclaw Wellingham and Tasty Deathclaw Omelette to the repertoire of meals the Sole Survivor can cook. This is somewhat useful in Survival mode, but as deathclaw eggs are not a common item, it’s hardly worth it.

What Happens If You Take The Egg Back To The Deathclaw Nest?

A Strange Encounter With Daddy Deathclaw

The second option is to return to the location mentioned by Sergeant Lee in his holotape to give the egg back to the deathclaws. The quickest route is to head for Parsons Creamery and walk due west, or if the tower at Lynn Woods has been discovered, the deathclaw nest is northwest. As soon as the deathclaw nest is approached, a non-hostile deathclaw will drop down to observe the Sole Survivor's actions.

Most companions will dislike the egg being returned to the nest, except Piper and Nick Valentine, making them the best companions to complete this section of the quest with.

To complete the quest, the egg must be placed in the nest, at which point the friendly deathclaw will walk forward to bury it in dirt. On the ground next to the nest will be the Deathclaw Gauntlet, a melee weapon made out of the bones and claws of the titular creature. As with the museum, companions will make comments about helping the deathclaw or making hasty retreats.

Why You Should Choose To Return The Egg

You Get Better Rewards & Karma

The friendly deathclaw standing on its hind legs in Fallout 4

There is a way to gain both rewards for this Fallout 4 side quest, as the friendly deathclaw will remain non-hostile so long as the Sole Survivor doesn’t walk away with the egg or try to take it back. To get all the rewards, travel to the nest and pick up the Deathclaw Gauntlet from the ground before immediately fast traveling to Diamond City. From there, Wellingham can be spoken to as usual to gain the caps and recipe.

However, for those that don’t want to ‘game’ the quest and want to roleplay through the outcome in Fallout 4, it is better to return the egg to the nest as the rewards are much more useful, and it feels like the right thing to do. The Deathclaw Gauntlet can be upgraded to increase its damage, and while you can’t use it when in Power Armor, companions can. Wellingham’s caps are nice, but there are a plethora of ways to earn caps in the game, while the gauntlet is more unique and useful.
