Fallout 4 has plenty of locations to discover and quests to complete, all usually with one of the many companions in tow. As well as providing backup in a fight and extra carrying capacity, companions are a lot of fun as they will frequently have comments about places and situations. However, every now and again a companion will have something to say that can completely alter how a player might see or think about an aspect of the game.

Companions are a core aspect of many RPGs, and their dialogue and banter with other characters is often a great way to figure out their opinions, likes, and dislikes. All 16 Fallout 4 companions have unique points of view, which influence what actions will help build affinity with them to unlock perks. And while most dialogue from companions offers insight into their personality, for faction-specific characters it can also shed light on the inner workings of that particular group.

The Institute's Version Of Liberty Prime Was Not As Cool

A Giant Mr Handy Isn’t Very Intimidating

Not many Sole Survivors may end up traveling with X6-88, the Courser assigned to them after Father names them the next Director of the Institute. X6 can only become a full companion after siding with the Institute during the Battle of Bunker Hill, so many will miss out on his deadpan delivery of some of the funniest lines in the game. One of these will occur if X6 is taken to the General Atomics Galleria, on the southern edge of Lake Quannapowitt, east of Tenpines Bluff.

“We sent a team up to try to repair that robot, only to find it was hollowed out.” – X6-88

Walking up to the Galleria, the first thing that stands out is the giant Mr. Handy statue that serves as the location’s centerpiece. Getting closer will trigger X6’s comment, where he will explain that the Institute once thought the statue was a real working robot and intended to repair it to take control of it. It is left to the Sole Survivor’s imagination what the Institute would do with a giant Mr. Handy, but the most obvious comparison would be the Brotherhood of Steel’s Liberty Prime, which feels like such a silly thing for such a serious organization to do.

Looking into the history of one of Fallout's most secretive and sinister factions.

It is unclear how the Institute learned about the Mr. Handy statue, although the most likely answers would be either from a scouting team or one of its many informants. Given the hostility of the Mr. Handys in the Galleria, it is doubtful that any early model Synth scout would have ventured too close. This same danger would have also kept informants such as Trashcan Carla or Cricket at bay as well, leaving the Institute with incomplete information for it to formulate its plans around.

The General Atomics Galleria Hides A Dangerous Secret

The Galleria’s Director Had Some Errors In His Code

If the Institute's informants or scouts had conducted proper reconnaissance of the area, they would have quickly learned the strange and dangerous secret of the Galleria. Built by General Atomics pre-war, the shopping center was designed to showcase the brilliance of the company’s Mr. Handy robots by having all the shops and attractions run by them. However, thoroughly exploring the area will reveal that the Mr. Handys were causing issues and the area is still littered with skeletons.

Checking the various terminals around the Galleria shows that pre-war staff had their concerns about the Mr. Handys' behavior and there is even evidence of fatalities occurring as a result. The Galleria's Director, a modified Mr. Gutsy, eventually killed the human supervisor, prompting General Atomics to send a new one. Unfortunately, this was due to happen on October 23, 2077, meaning that the malfunctioning robots had been left unchecked since the Great War.

The supervisor's is in the left hand of the supervisor's skeleton in the Director's office, while the Galleria DMS override can be found by reading the logs on the terminal in Back Alley Bowling.

The Sole Survivor can find the supervisor’s during the Fallout 4 quest “Galleria”, and will have the option to destroy, shut down, or update the Mr. Handys at the Galleria. Updating them is the best option and is achieved by choosing the Grand Reopening option as this will make all the other Mr. Handys in the area non-hostile. After a few days, the Mr. Handys will clear up the various stores and Waitron at Handy Eats will be available as a Fallout 4 merchant.
