One of the stars of the Faces of Death remake has teased how dark the new take is going to be. The movie was directed by CAM and How to Blow Up a Pipeline's Daniel Goldhaber from a screenplay he co-wrote with Isa Mazzei, who collaborated with him as the screenwriter of CAM and a producer of both previous titles. The star-studded cast of the movie is set to feature Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery, Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira, Coming 2 America's Jermaine Fowler, Saved by the Bell's Josie Totah, and pop star Charli XCX.
The original faux documentary movie, which was written and directed by John Alan Schwartz and claimed to share videos of real-life deaths, debuted in 1978, grossing $35 million against its $450,000 budget and becoming a notorious and divisive cult classic. It eventually spawned an entire series of Faces of Death movies, including three sequel compilations, two unofficial sequels, and a documentary about the franchise. The remake is set to be the first installment in more than 25 years, since the 1999 documentary Faces of Death: Fact or Fiction?.
Barbie Ferreira Teases Faces Of Death's Story And Tone
"It Was So Cool"
Barbie Ferreira has shared her insights into the Faces of Death remake. While the Euphoria star has only appeared in 10 movie and television projects over the course of her onscreen career so far, she is no stranger to the horror genre. Her horror debut came in Jordan Peele's 2022 hit Nope, in which she played one of Angel's (Brandon Perea) coworkers at Fry's, and she followed that by starring opposite Ariana DeBose in 2024's House of Spoils, which followed a chef opening a restaurant in a haunted house.
Barbie Ferreira plays Kat Hernandez in Euphoria.
Barbie Ferreira was featured in a recent video from Mythical Kitchen where she was interviewed by host Josh Scherer while eating what she would pick for her last meal. Although she appeared in the video while promoting her new movie Bob Trevino Likes It, the wide-ranging conversation eventually reached the topic of her horror movie. In addition to confirming that Faces of Death will take place in a meta universe where the original movies existed, she teased that the movie is "extremely dark" and "disgusting in all the best ways." Read her full quote and see the video below:
I shot it two years ago. Hopefully it comes out soon. It was… wow. The story incorporates Faces of Death. It’s like we live in a universe like ours right now where it exists. It was so cool. It was amazing.
I don’t want to ruin anything… I feel like all my favorite parts are things that will ruin it… But it’s extremely dark, it’s disgusting in the best ways, and Dacre, who plays one of the characters, he’s fantastic in it. I mean, everyone was like… it’s a spooky one.
What This Means For Faces Of Death
It Could Carry On The Legacy Of The Franchise
Barbie Ferreira's comments underscore the fact that the remake could potentially thread the needle of continuing the grotesque legacy of the controversial Faces of Death without diving into those controversies itself. By taking place in a world where the original movies exist, and are seemingly being recreated by an unknown killer or killers, it stands at a remove from the divisive approach of presenting itself as a snuff film. However, if Ferreira's assessment is correct, it could still provide the stomach-turning gore for which the franchise is known, appeasing fans of the original movies in the process.
