Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake is now the center of a new franchise as Extraction 3 is confirmed to be on the way. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, the Extraction franchise focuses on black ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Hemsworth). In the first Extraction movie, Rake is tasked with rescuing the kidnapped son of an Indian crime lord. 2023's Extraction 2, in which Rake is hired to break a Georgian gangster’s family out of prison.

When Extraction became Netflix’s most-watched original movie ever they didn’t waste any time greenlighting a sequel, and Extraction 3 continued this trend (along with news of possible spinoffs). The Extraction 3 cast will likely contain many news surprises just like its predecessor, along with some returning faces as Netflix further builds the Extraction property into a franchise. As far as many audience are concerned, however, the key information is what the Extraction 3 story could have in store for Tyler Rake when the release date arrives.

Joe Russo Gives A Confident Update

Though little news has surfaced throughout 2024, the latest update comes as Joe Russo discusses the development of Extraction 3. Though the acclaimed filmmaker merely verified that work is still happening behind the scenes, he is confident that the project will finally get rolling very soon. "It's definitely filming next year," said Russo, before cheekily adding "I'm just being cagey because it's more fun."

It's a clear sign that Netflix has a lot of faith in this franchise going forward, and they are committed to continuing the bloody and brutal adventures of Tyler Rake.

Extraction 3 has officially been confirmed by Netflix at Tudum: A Global Fan Event. The Extraction 3 confirmation announcement came mere months after Extraction 2 became available on Netflix. It's a clear sign that Netflix has a lot of faith in this franchise going forward, and they are committed to continuing the bloody and brutal adventures of Tyler Rake. In addition to the news that Extraction 3 is happening, producer Anthony Russo also teased that the universe could be fleshed out in an Idris Elba-centered Extraction spin-off.

Little concrete news has surfaced in the time since, though the Russos have dropped a few hints about where the project currently stands in the development phase. In October 2024, Joe Russo revealed that writing was still taking place, but that the movie was going to begin filming in 2025. Russo didn't specify which part of 2025 the movie would shoot in, so production details are still elusive.

Chris Hemsworth Will Return

Although the full cast hasn't been finalized yet, it is known that Extraction 3 will see the return of star Chris Hemsworth as the series’ protagonist, black ops mercenary Tyler Rake. Not surprisingly, his return was confirmed along with the official announcement of the third movie going forward.

The other franchise regular who can be expected to return is Golshifteh Farahani, who played Nik Kahn, a fellow mercenary and partner of Tyler’s, in Extraction. While Hemsworth and Farahani are the only two of the Extraction 2 cast to have appeared in the first movie, the sequel introduces some potential returning faces, including Olga Kurylenko as Rake's ex-wife Mia and Idris Elba as the shadowy operative Alcott who recruits Rake and Nik.

No Story Details Have Been Revealed Yet

Although Sam Hargrave has an idea for where it could go, he hasn’t revealed his Extraction 3 story idea. So far, the Extraction franchise has been following an anthology format with Rake picking up a new black ops rescue mission in each movie. Since Joe Russo is expanding the franchise’s worldbuilding in his script for Extraction 2, the next sequel might not be another standalone adventure; it could turn the series into a more serialized, interconnected affair.

Whatever the story for Extraction 3 ends up being, it will likely retain the franchise tradition of exploring new locales in each movie. Like the globetrotting James Bond franchise, each new entry in the Extraction series sends Rake to new corners of the world. The first movie took him to Dhaka, Bangladesh, while the second one took him to Georgia. However, if the filmmakers wanted to shake things up and subvert the expectations of an Extraction movie, then Extraction 3 could see Rake battling villains on his home turf in Australia.
