Extraction 2 producer Anthony Russo has teased a potential spinoff with Idris Elba’s mysterious character from the Netflix sequel. Following the 2020 original streaming hit produced by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Extraction 2 sees Chris Hemsworth return as the formidable ex-SAS soldier turned mercenary Tyler Rake. In a surprise casting announcement, Hemsworth's former Marvel co-star Elba was also revealed to making an appearance in the Netflix sequel just weeks ahead of the film’s streaming release on June 16, 2023.
However, it would seem that Elba’s brief appearance in the film may not be his last time in Netflix’s burgeoning Extraction universe. Speaking with RadioTimes.com, Anthony Russo teased the potential return of Elba’s mysterious character, known as The Man In The Suit. Praising The Suicide Squad star’s commanding performance, Anthony Russo hinted “there's more fun to be had with him.” Check out his comments below:
[It's] a classic example of a character who doesn't have a whole lot of screen time, but the screen time that he does have is fascinating and he commands the screen. And that's part of the reason why we turned to him... just thinking about as we move forward with the storytelling, bringing in new elements into the narrative universe, that is very exciting, and combustible and intriguing. So I just know when I watched him in this film, I feel like 'oh, geez, there's more fun to be had with him!
What Are Netflix’s Plans For The Extraction Universe?
Watched by over 99 million households in its first month of release, the original Extraction movie was a major success story for Netflix who invested a reported $69 million in the high-profile action thriller. Given its record-breaking viewership numbers, it came as little surprise when the streamer announced that a sequel was in development just weeks after the first movie was released. Later that year, however, the Russo brothers also revealed that their plans for the Extraction universe did not end with the film’s sequel, and they hoped to launch their own continuing franchise based on the property.
In addition to hoping to have Hemsworth return for a potential Extraction 3, it has been suggested that the Extraction franchise could also serve to deliver multiple spinoffs focused on other characters beyond Tyler Rake. Back in 2021, it was also rumored that one such spinoff could potentially take the form of an origin story for Randeep Hooda’s former Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel Saju Rav from the first film.
Now with the Russo brothers eying Elba’s enigmatic Man In The Suit for his own franchise return, it would seem that Netflix may have a wealth of options at its disposal. At the moment, however, nothing has been made official beyond the release of Extraction 2, and plans for any potential spinoffs will likely hinge on the sequel’s success. Whether Hemsworth’s return as Tyler Rake will have the same impact as his character’s debut remains to be seen, but Elba’s own abbreviated involvement seems to have already struck a chord with the Russo brothers.
